The Kansas City Chiefs led by their ingenious head coach Andy Reid, defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in the Super Bowl on Sunday. Furthermore, the Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was named the Super Bowl MVP for his brilliant performance despite suffering an injury. Following this great performance, Colin Cowherd is now comparing Mahomes’ injury-riddled performance to the likes of Michael Jordan and Golf legend Tiger Woods.
The 2022 NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes suffered an ankle injury during the divisional round game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He suffered the injury during the first quarter of the game but continued to play through his injury to give his team a shot at winning the game. Furthermore, he played the entirety of the AFC Championship game against the Cincinnati Bengals with the injury.
Even after two weeks of rest, Mahomes was not able to recover 100% from the injury but decided to play the game anyway. The Chiefs QB was visibly in pain throughout the game but was still able to make the biggest play of the game when it was needed. During the fourth quarter of the game, the scores were tied at 35 a piece and the Chiefs had the ball around the midfield.
During this crucial moment, Mahomes scrambled for 26 yards to get his team inside the red zone. The Chiefs went on to win the game 38-35 on the back of a last-minute field goal from their kicker Harrison Butker. It was one of the greatest moments in the game and Colin Cowherd compared it to NBA legend Michael Jordan’s iconic switch-hands layup.
Colin Cowherd compares the Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes to Michael Jordan
Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd compared Patrick Mahomes‘ 29-yard scramble on an injured ankle to the likes of Tiger Woods playing a torn ACL and Michael Jordan’s switch-hands layup.
“That run with that ankle injury was one of the great moments in Super Bowl history,” said Cowherd in a recent episode of his show The Herd. “It’s like Tiger [Woods] winning a US Open with a broken leg or a torn ACL. Like that’s the difference between Phil Mickelson and Tiger [Woods].”
“In the biggest tournament, with the most stress, and greatest competition, and the best team, 17 guys for the Eagles or Pro Bowlers or alternates and he [Mahomes] is delivering that run on that leg in that moment, outrunning linebackers, there’s nothing like it. It’s very much Michael Jordan switching hands. It’s very much Tiger with a torn ACL winning a US Open,” said Colin about Mahomes.
During game 2 of the 1991 NBA Finals between the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls and the LA Lakers, Jordan switched hands from right to left in mid-air to get a bucket in the final quarter of the game. That iconic moment still resonates with NBA fans today, even after three decades.
