Boulder fans have turned out in numbers at Folsom Field every matchday to watch Deion Sanders (Coach Prime) conduct his Colorado Buffaloes team. On Friday night against the Stanford Cardinals, the atmosphere was no different.
It was a sellout as usual, and the Buffaloes provided a lot to cheer for in the first half. Sanders’ team dominated the visitors and took a 29-unanswered lead. The stadium was buzzing, and at some point, the referees had to intervene because of the party atmosphere. The Stanford players were apparently having difficulties hearing each other’s callouts.
“Will the public address announcer please stop playing while Stanford is in formation for a snap?” the head ref said. He warned them that if it continued, he would be forced to penalize Colorado for “unsportsmanlike conduct.”
The funny thing is that the audience was surprised at the decision and let out a collective boo. When everyone settled back in their seats, the game resumed. However, the scenario changed completely, and they were in shock.
Colorado’s poor defensive woes came back to bite them in the back. Early in the second half, Sanders’ Buffaloes allowed three touchdowns. Two of them were scored by Stanford’s player of the night, wide receiver Elic Ayomanor.
Slowly but surely, the game started to slip from the home team’s grasp, and when it went into overtime, alarm bells started ringing. However, there was still hope, as recent history was on their side. On matchday 3 vs. the Colorado State Rams, CU won in overtime.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case this time around, as Cardinals Joshua Karty, whose kick forced overtime, scored again in OT to snatch the game under Deion Sanders’ nose. Fans were stunned by the outcome of the game.

Deion Sanders was not happy with his team’s performance
The Buffaloes gave away 17 penalties in last night’s game, and truth be told, it could have been more. This is a big gray area that has nagged CU since the start of the season. Scoring points is important, but failing to defend against the opposition attack costs matches.
“Not being smart, not being disciplined, not understanding the moment,” coach Deion Sanders told the press after the game. “I felt complacency going into the half because we stalled offensively and stalled some yardage as well.”
Then the conversation switched on to offensive coordinator Charles Kelly‘s shot-calling. Under his mentorship, CU has given away at least 23 points every game. That’s not a good start for a team looking to leave a mark in college football. However, Coach Prime took the blame on himself.
“If you are going to point a finger, then you might as well point it at me,” he said. “Because I am allowing it. This should be on me and not him.”
They have to sort out the leaky defense quickly because their next opponent is the 18th-ranked UCLA Bruins. Last time, they beat Washington State and have a 3-1 record after four games.
