Ron Rivera revealed that he had spoken with Eric Bieniemy about his remarks that some players have expressed concern about the offensive coordinator’s training style. The Washington Commanders’ head coach gave a lengthy explanation at his press conference, admitting that his comments “took on a different life.”
“I basically told him I put my foot in my mouth,” Rivera said. “I think what I said wasn’t as clear, and my understanding of it is [that] everybody’s making a little bit more than needs to be made of this.”
The Washington Commanders hired Biemiemy to replace offensive coordinator Scott Turner. Under Turner, they finished with the 24th-best scoring offense last season. Rivera has faith in his new OC and has offered his complete support.
“I think Eric has done a great job of communicating his message,” Rivera said. “Guys have opened up and talked with him. I’ve seen the improvements.”
Biemiemy spent the last five years with the league’s best team, the Kansas City Chiefs. He was the assistant head coach to Andy Reid and won two Super Bowls during that time. Rivera brought him in to add the same Midas touch and explained that different coaches have different approaches. For example, he compared Biemiemy to the Commander’s defensive coordinator, Jack Del Rio.
“We all have our own way of doing things,” he said on Wednesday. “Neither one’s better than the other.” The 61-year-old played nine seasons during his time in the NFL. He compared Biemiemy to some of his former coaches.

It’s normal for players to take time to adjust to a new coaching style. It gets even harder when a franchise enters a new regime under different owners. However, what’s most important is that they learn and try to incorporate that during matchday.
Eric Bieniemy spoke about his approach to training players. “I’m always going to be loud and vocal, [and] always going to demand from my leaders,” he said on Tuesday. “It’s my job to make sure I’m getting our guys to do what I’m expecting them to do.“
Meanwhile, Rivera looked pleased with how his squad was coming along. “I think we’re all on the same page,” he told NFL.com. “I’m fortunate to have Eric and Jack. We’re working to build a culture where players and staff can respect each other.”
At the end of the day, it’s about winning and losing. The Washington Commanders kick off their 2023 NFL season against the Arizona Cardinals on September 10.
