The Washington Commanders are in the middle of a major rebranding. Firstly, owner Dan Snyder is willing to sell the Commanders he has owned since 1999. Bids from billionaires have been flowing in as Snder reportedly wants to sell the franchise for no less than $6 billion. This bidding war took an interesting turn when Snyder refused to accept any bids from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Second of all, the D.C.-based football team hired 2x Super Bowl-winning coach Eric Bieniemy as their new assistant head coach/offensive coordinator. As of Monday night, the Commanders released quarterback Carson Wentz after one season.

The Commanders traded their second and third-round picks in 2022 and a conditional third-round pick in the 2023 draft in exchange for Carson Wentz from the Indianapolis Colts. However, the season didn’t go as they had planned and Wentz wasn’t able to find his footing in Washington which led to him being released.

Carson Wentz was selected 2nd overall in the 2016 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. His rookie year ended with a losing record but he bounced back harder and had a breakout season in his second year as he went 11-2 before suffering a season-ending injury. Nick Foles took his place and helped the Eagles to win their first and only Super Bowl championship.

Wentz started only eight games for the Commanders where he won only 2 games and lost 5. He suffered an injury but wasn’t put back after his recovery because Taylor Heinicke delivered wins under center. The 30-year-old finished the 2022 season with 172 completion for 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. Wentz was heavily trolled after he was released by the Commanders following his poor performance and inability to win games.

Here are some of the reactions of fans on Twitter.

Carson Wentz’s wife is Madison Oberg, and he is now a free agent. Given his performance in recent seasons, not many teams will be lining up outside his door to sign him. That being said, he still has the potential to be a good quarterback and maybe just needs the right place, the right coaches, and the right teammates to help him prove that. Let’s see where he lands in 2023.
