Lamar Jackson is well aware of the challenge that Patrick Mahomes poses. These two heavyweights will face each other when the Baltimore Ravens welcome the Kansas City Chiefs to M&T Bank Stadium for the AFC Championship game on January 28th.
This will be the first time the Ravens franchise will host a championship game at home. But this won’t be the first time Jackson has gone up against Mahomes.
Jackson said on Wednesday, speaking to the media:
I don't like competing against him at all. He's definitely a great QB. Definitely a Hall of Famer. That's a no-brainer.Lamar Jackson said
However, the 27-year-old knows that, for him to win his first Super Bowl, he has no choice but to beat opponents like Mahomes.
Jackson added:
To be a champion, you gotta go through a champion.Lamar Jackson added
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback had the upper hand in their three previous meetings. Mahomes has three wins compared to Jackson’s one. That Ravens QB’s only win over Mahomes came back in September 2021, when the Ravens edged the Chiefs 36-35 in Baltimore.
Patrick Mahomes claimed Lamar Jackson would become the NFL MVP
Similar to the Baltimore Ravens QB, who has never played a home playoff game, Mahomes never faced any opposition until the Bills last week. The 28-year-old won his tie, but he can’t let Jackson break his duck. Yet there’s mutual respect between the two.
All season, Jackson has been one of the best players in the league and is rightfully in the MVP conversation. According to Sports Illustrated, the three-time Pro Bowler is the favorite to bag his second MVP title. And Mahomes claimed that his counterpart had every right to win it again.
Mahomes said, addressing the media:
He's going to be the MVP for a reason. He goes out there, he leads his team, he scores, he runs, he throws, he does whatever it takes to win, and that's what the greats do.Patrick Mahomes said
Jackson missed two games during the 2019 season, playing 15. In those games, he amassed 265 pass completions for 3,127 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and only 6 interceptions, for a rating of 113.3, which propelled him to be voted the unanimous MVP.
Mahomes added:
It'll be a great challenge for our defense, but also a great challenge for our offense against their defense. It's going to take a full team effort if we are going to find a way to get a win.Patrick Mahomes went on to add
The odd makers agree with the two-ring holder. According to SportsLine Sportsbook, the Ravens are 3.5-point favorites to advance to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2012.
