The San Francisco 49ers vs. the Dallas Cowboys have always generated a lot of media attention. But last Sunday’s matchup between the two juggernauts of football was special for another reason. It marked the return of Trey Lance for the first time since his offseason move to Dallas.
Some will say that the NFL scripted it, but this type of story makes the game even more interesting. A player returns to his former team, where he wasn’t exactly a match-winner but is still fondly remembered by fans. Probably Lance was expecting something similar, but he wasn’t exactly ready for what was about to go down at Levi’s Stadium.
Fans started pouring in two hours before the kickoff. Several noteworthy faces showed up to watch the contest. A couple of 49ers legends, Steve Young and Terell Owens, were present to cheer for Brock Purdy and Co.
To their delight, the home side took the lead and never looked back. A hattrick for George Kittle and a 14-straight-game touchdown for Christian McCaffrey proved why they were unbeaten in 2023.
The Dallas Cowboys, on the other hand, were struggling, especially quarterback Dak Prescott. Even though this was the game that Prescott couldn’t afford to lose, the 49ers defense made it a living hell for him. For the first time this season, he had less than 200 passing yards. Not only that, but coming into the game, the Cowboys QB1 only had one interception all season, but he threw three in quick succession. To rub salt in the wounds, fans can be heard chanting, ‘We want Trey.’
Skip Bayless wanted to see Trey Lance replace Dak Prescott
Whoever watches football is aware of Skip Bayless‘ love for the Dallas Cowboys. He was ready to cheer for them from the comforts of his home, hoping to see a good game. But as time went on, it kept getting worse.
The situation took a drastic turn when Dak Prescott overthrew his pass to Brandin Cooks. Instead, it went to 49ers safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. Witnessing the horrible meltdown, Bayless tweeted, “Might as well give Trey Lance a shot against his old team. It can’t be any worse than this.”
Unfortunately, that was not possible because Lance was designated inactive and only appeared in an emergency. The Cowboys still had Cooper Rush as their backup, who later replaced the 30-year-old. After the game, Bayless threw a Prescott jersey into the trash can to vent his frustration.
