Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy feels there’s ‘plenty of blame to go around’ after their embarrassing loss to the Commanders

Mike McCarthy is confident the team will turn around by the time they land in Tampa, Florida.

America’s team, the Dallas Cowboys, ended the regular season with yet another loss. The Washington Commanders’ defense was successful in containing Mike McCarthy’s offense and let them score only one touchdown in the entire game. The Cowboys lost 6-26 to the Commanders and won’t have the home advantage in the Wild Card game.

The Cowboys won’t have any momentum as they enter the postseason with the dream of winning the Super Bowl. Last year, they were ousted by the 49ers in the Wild Card game itself and owner Jerry Jones has been vocal about his disappointment with the team and the head coach from that point on.

While Jerry Jones has said that he believes the team is in a better position to win games this season as compared to the last one, their latest performance begs to differ. Head coach McCarthy has been on the host seat for over a year with his inability to win games in the postseason. He carries a significant amount of pressure as he enters the playoffs with a fresh defeat.

Mike McCarthy says he takes full responsibility for the team’s loss on Sunday night

During the post-game interview, head coach Mike McCarthy shared his opinion of the team’s performance against the Commanders. “Not very good at all. We played poorly,” McCarthy said. “We played some combinations of guys and I thought they did a good job on the defense.” He added that they couldn’t get the run game going, which is a big issue if they wish to win in the playoffs.

When asked about the offense not being able to score any points and Dak Prescott registering another below-average performance, McCarthy replied: “This is not about one guy. I mean you can’t look at our offensive performance and blame it all on one guy. So plenty to go around.” Dak Prescott has thrown only 2860 yards for 23 touchdowns and a career-high 15 interceptions. Despite being paid the big bucks, Prescott is yet to turn in a performance that makes the Cowboys front office go ‘this is the guy that will lead us to the Super Bowl.’

Mike McCarthy said that he takes full responsibility for the team playing poorly on Sunday night and added that the Cowboys’ productivity over the span of 17 games is better than any other team in the entire league. He pointed out that the team will watch the tapes of their game during the plane and bus ride to Tampa and clean out any and all mistakes they did in the game and make sure to not repeat them in the do-or-die matchup against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers.

The Cowboys’ inability to win a Super Bowl can’t be written off on Mike McCarthy alone. He is the first head coach to win 12 games in a consecutive season since 1994-95. That’s a pretty big achievement along with the fact that Dallas was contending for the No.1 seed in the NFC alongside the Philadelphia Eagles. Jerry Jones had pointed out six months back that this is a playoff viable team.

Whether his prediction was right will be tested soon enough as McCarthy’s measuring season also starts in the playoffs as his future as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys hangs in the balance. The Cowboys will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round on January 16 at Raymond James Stadium.
