The Dallas Cowboys have started the 2023 NFL season with two dominating wins over the New York teams. They started their campaign with a shutout win over the New York Giants and then rolled over the Aaron Rodgers-less New York Jets the following week. A lot of the credit for the team’s early success goes to the HC Mike McCarthy.
This is McCarthy’s fourth season as the Cowboys’ HC. Although the team has been to the playoffs under him, they have yet to reach the Super Bowl. McCarthy recently appeared on The Rich Eisen Show to talk about the Cowboys and the team’s owner Jerry Jones. He also joked about Jones’ ‘deal with the Lord’ for a Super Bowl win.
“A couple of times a week,” McCarthy told Eisen when asked about the frequency of interactions between him and Jones. “We have a really good communication.” Eisen asked McCarthy about Jones’ apparent ‘deal with the Lord’ before the team’s third Super Bowl win nearly three decades ago. Jones came on Eisen’s show and talked about redoing that deal for another Super Bowl win. McCarthy joked about it, saying, “I wish you told me that before I took the job.”
The Cowboys are contenders to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl this year. After a great start to the season, the Dallas-based team has the best defense in the NFL for two weeks. They will play the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday and will hope to continue this dominant win streak.
Mike McCarthy talks about Trevon Diggs’ injury
The Dallas Cowboys have the best defense in the NFL right now. A major reason for that was All-Pro CB Trevon Diggs. He has been one of the best DBs in the league and has consistently performed at a very high level for the Cowboys. However, the Cowboys were dealt with a huge blow on Thursday’s practice when Diggs tore his ACL.
HC Mike McCarthy talked about Diggs’ injury in a conference call on Friday. “Obviously you feel sick [for] him,” he said. “It’s definitely a punch to the gut for our football team, but this is an opportunity for our defensive depth to stand up and continue to move forward.”
The Cowboys still have a great overall roster. Their defense is stacked with LB Micah Parsons leading the way. They will face the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday and are expected to win that game. It will be interesting to see who will fill the big shoes of Diggs on defense.
