The Dallas Cowboys had yet another disappointing season this year. Despite a good regular season run that concluded with the team securing the top spot in the NFC East, they faltered against the Green Bay Packers in the Wildcard Round of the playoffs.

The Cowboys had great production from their offense this season. QB Dak Prescott had an MVP-caliber year and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb has stepped up and grown into a star.

There was one player on offense whose contribution to the team went unnoticed by fans, tight end Jake Ferguson, who had a great year this season. He rose to the occasion this year and had 761 yards receiving on 71 receptions along with 5 touchdowns.

The fourth-round pick of the 2022 draft made the Pro Bowl in his second year in the NFL. In a recent interview with NFL Access, the tight end spoke on his mindset before the commencement of the 2023 season.

I think one of the bigger focuses I had in the offseason last year was figuring out and learning to trust our scheme. When I did get into the first game of the season, even pre-season, I was locked in on our offense and what we were trying to do on every play. There were certain plays that were in our offense to get me open and even the ones on which I wasn't the first read, maybe the second or the third read just knowing this is an opportunity...

Jake Ferguson has established solid chemistry with Dak Prescott

The tight end spent the better part of last season solely focusing on improving himself and familiarizing himself with the team’s offensive playbook. Once he accomplished that, he changed his mindset and began to approach the game one play at a time.

Rather than focusing on the final outcome, he kept his focus on each and every play. As he did this, he found more opportunities to step up and help the offense.

Jake Ferguson spent an extended time with Dak Prescott in the offseason as well. The duo began to build on-field chemistry by spending additional time practicing after team practices concluded. This process helped Prescott understand Ferguson’s timing and speed better and, as a result, he was able to throw perfect passes to him.

Jake Ferguson is bound to grow and prove himself to be an asset to the Cowboys’ offense. The tight end came in clutch on many instances, wherein he was the third or fourth option. He remains focused on doing his part and leading this team past their playoff hump.

The Cowboys have struggled to perform in the playoffs when it counts the most. With Mike McCarthy in his final year as the team’s HC, they will move heaven and earth to ensure a positive outcome this season.
