The New England Patriots’ decision to let go of both their back QBs caused a lot of buzz. This buzz culminated in theories of former Patriots’ QB Tom Brady coming out of retirement to play for the team. However, these rumors were quickly quashed by Brady and he made it clear that he was not coming back.
One player who did consider coming out of retirement was former Dallas Cowboys QB Troy Aikman. While appearing on The Adam Schefter Podcast, Aikman revealed that he almost came out of retirement to play for the Miami Dolphins in 2003.
“I had a chance initially and I was gonna do it quite honestly,” Aikman told the host Adam Schefter on the podcast. “I was gonna come back and the Dolphins were looking at me. Dave Wannstedt was the head coach. Norv Turner was the offensive coordinator. I had trained that offseason, prepared to come back and play. And they felt like they were a quarterback away from achieving what they wanted to do.”
He further continued saying, “So, I was gonna do it, I thought, ‘Well, I’ll give it a shot.’ Rick Spielman was the [senior vice president of football operations] and he ultimately was the one, I believe, that decided not to sign me, which was probably a good thing from their perspective. And it was a great thing from my perspective because they weren’t a quarterback away….They were not very good. It all worked out just fine.”
Aikman played in the NFL for 12 seasons, all for the Dallas Cowboys. He won three Super Bowl titles with them and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. He was the Super Bowl MVP in 1993. It would have been interesting to see what the Dolphins would have achieved if they had signed Aikman out of retirement.
Troy Aikman considering retirement from commentating in the NFL
Troy Aikman played for the Dallas Cowboys for 12 seasons and won three Super Bowl titles. One of the best quarterbacks of his generation, Aikman was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006. After retiring from the NFL, he ventured into the world of media and has had a successful career there as well.
Aikman and fellow commentator Joe Buck formed a partnership with Fox Sports before the pair moved to ESPN in 2022. In an interview with 96.7 FM/1310 AM The Ticket in June, Aikman revealed he was considering retirement from commentary. “I probably give it more thought than I should, I always have been [mindful] of our time being limited. So I posed the question to myself a lot that, you know, if you’ve got ‘X’ number of years left, what exactly do you want to do with that time? I’ve got a pretty good idea. And not to suggest that I’m retiring any time in the near future, but I’ve got an idea as to when I believe that I’ll retire.”
Aikman also considered coming out of retirement in 2003 to play for the Miami Dolphins. He had ambitions of becoming a general manager but fears his chances of doing so have passed by him.
