The Dallas Cowboys had a great start to the 2023 NFL season winning their first two games in dominating fashion. However, they faced early season adversity after losing their All-Pro CB Trevon Diggs to an ACL injury. Diggs tore his ACL in practice last week and was ruled out for the entire season. The Cowboys faced the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday in their week 3 matchup and were surprisingly beaten by a rebuilding Cardinals team.
The Cowboys’ offense has been playing well through three weeks, but they have struggled in the red zone. They lead the NFL in red-zone possessions with 15 but have converted only six of them. After a successful performance in week 1, where the team scored three touchdowns in four red-zone trips, the Cowboys have faltered the last two weeks in the red-zone, going 3-11 in those two games.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones opened up about the team’s red-zone struggles in an interview on 105.3 The Fan. “I think the thing we need to zero in on is when we get that ball down in there close, we’ve got to get touchdowns,” he said. “And that’s probably across the board over these last three ball games. We got a long time to go in this season. We got a lot of room to really adjust and correct these things. While it is something to note, it’s not a long-range concern.”
The Cowboys are tied as the fourth-worst team in the red zone with a 40% conversion rate. They generated more than 400 yards of offense in week 3 against the Cardinals but only scored 16 points, thanks to their 20% red-zone conversion. The Cowboys will play the New England Patriots next Sunday, October 1.
Jerry Jones talks about former Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott
The Dallas Cowboys will host the New England Patriots next Sunday. The Patriots RB Ezekiel Elliott will return to AT&T Stadium for the first time after signing with the New England-based team earlier this year. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones talked about Elliott’s return to Dallas and his unique build that makes him a red-zone threat.

The Cowboys are one of the worst red-zone teams in the NFL and Jones addressed that before adding that it is “good to have” Elliott’s “unique physicalness” for short yardages. “Zeke’s unique physicalness is always nice to have — not to be trite about it — it’s very good to have,” he said. “We think of physical on short yardage and probably should, but I don’t think that physicalness from the running back is contributing to us not getting the end zone. It is not.”
The Cowboys might have a surprise planned for Elliott’s return to Dallas this Sunday as Jones was asked about the buzz surrounding his return. “I don’t want to blow a surprise,” Jones said, suggesting that there might be something planned for the former Cowboy.
Elliott spent the first seven years of his career in Dallas after being drafted by the Cowboys in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He became one of the best RBs in the league after that. He signed a one-year deal with the Patriots in August this year.
