Some meetings are just not meant to be. Like Trevon Diggs and Beyonce. The Queen of Melody was due to continue her Renaissance World Tour today at AT&T Stadium. Unfortunately, Diggs won’t be present to watch her perform.
The Dallas Cowboys cornerback suffered a devastating ACL injury earlier during practice, and as per the official statement, he will miss out on the rest of the season. It’s a massive setback, not just for the Cowboys but also for Trevon Diggs.
He was gearing up to celebrate his 25th birthday in style. As per Cowboys insider Clarence Hill Jr., Diggs booked a suit at AT&T to watch Beyonce sing her greatest hits. He even bought a customized silver outfit just for the day. However, he won’t be present in the stands on the night.
Trevon Diggs’ absence leaves a gaping hole in the Dallas Cowboys defense
At the pace at which the Dallas Cowboys were winning games, several analysts put them as one of the favorites to not just win the NFC but also the Super Bowl. Their biggest asset is the defense, which has ranked in the top 5 for consecutive seasons.
On top of that, they went into the market and added some crucial elements to increase the depth. For the past few years, Trevon Diggs has remained a stalwart in the Cowboys backline. The inclusion of Brandin Cooks and the draft of Micah Parsons only solidified their defense.
But sometimes it’s hard to keep all the pieces intact, and that’s what happened. Now that Diggs is no longer part of the main roster, shutting down opposition offenses will be tricky. The Cowboys, for the moment, have to rely on second-year CB DaRon Bland, who only played a handful of snaps last year. Then there’s 28-year-old Jourdan Lewis, who is primarily the backup to Cooks at left cornerback. He can fill in if required.
Should the Dallas Cowboys look for a Diggs replacement?
Owner Jerry Jones has a knack for thinking ahead. If Trey Lance‘s trade is taken into account, then it won’t be surprising that the Cowboys will look for a Trevon Diggs replacement to patch up the hole. There are a few interesting candidates that they can scout.
Former New Orleans Saints player Bradley Roby is currently a free agent. The Saints released the 31-year-old during the recent roster cut. Despite not boasting a great COVID time record, the veteran can certainly be a good stand-in for Trevon Diggs.
Then there’s 34-year-old Casey Howard, who may be a little old for the job but can put up a good number for one season. The two-time Pro Bowler led the NFL in interceptions in 2016. Well, it’s true that it was eight years ago. Still, an experienced head could prove beneficial.
Now a left-field shout for the vacant Diggs spot: A. J. Green. Don’t confuse him with the former Bengals receiver who just retired. Green plays for the Cleveland Browns practice squad. In 2021, he earned a grade of 90.3 from PFF over the 116 coverage snaps, indicating that he played only a handful of games. On top of that, he had a dip in form in 2022. But he is the same age as Trevon Diggs, and standing at 6 feet 1 could prove to be effective.
In the end, it all comes down to what the Dallas Cowboys want. They are two for two in the NFL and are favorites to make it three against the Arizona Cardinals on September 24.
