The Kansas City Chiefs lost their opening game of the season against the Detroit Lions. The Chiefs missed a couple of their key players during the game. One of them was DT Chris Jones who was holding out because of a contract dispute with the front office. The Chiefs missed their star defender as they struggled to stop the Lions offense on multiple key plays.

Jones received substantial criticism for not playing in the Chiefs’ opener. One of his critics, Craig Carton, blamed Jones for the Chiefs’ defeat to the Lions. He also labeled Jones as an ‘idiot’ on his show The Craig Carton Show.

“I think Chris Jones is a great football player, but he is an idiot.” Carton said on the show. “To say that ‘I don’t want to be a distraction.’ You showed up for the home opener, and you weren’t in football gear. You’re in street clothes. Like you were a big distraction.”

He further continued by saying, “You obviously cost them a game in part to the Detroit Lions. And you wound up not getting a nickel more than you would have made if you just showed up. All they did was give you a raise to cover the three and a half million dollars with a fine.”

Jones was a major part of the Chiefs’ 2022 Super Bowl-winning team. He had 15.5 sacks last season and was one of the best players in his position. Jones’ holdout ended with him signing a 1-year deal with the Chiefs after the season opener. He will be expected to play in the Chiefs’ next game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Chris Jones and the Kansas City Chiefs were involved in a contract situation in this year’s offseason. Jones did not participate in the team’s training camp and did not suit up for the team’s first game against the Detroit Lions. He accumulated more the $2 million in fines for his absence from training camp.

Jones’ holdout ended with him signing a one-year deal with the Chiefs. The deal is worth up to $25 million including $5 million in incentives. His current $19.5 million remains the same, minus the $1.08 million game check. Kansas City Chiefs retained their ability to franchise tag Jones which will help them to potentially keep him off the market.

Jones is expected to play in the Chiefs’ next game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He had a great season last year accumulating 15.5 sacks and was a key part of the Super Bowl-winning team last season. He and the Chiefs will hope to defend their title this season.
