Football returned yesterday as the New York Jets faced off against the Cleveland Browns in Canton, Ohio, for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. To everyone’s surprise, coach Robert Saleh chose to start No. 2 Zach Wilson in place of the recently acquired Aaron Rodgers.
The game began smoothly for the New York side, as they looked to dominate early proceedings. Rodgers was down the touchline, hyping the players with his presence, and it looked to be working. Until Wilson made a hash of the play at the line of scrimmage,
During the 8:40-minute mark in the first quarter, the 24-year-old was looking in left field, searching for a receiver. Not seeing any leads, he dropped back and headed for the byline himself to gain some yardage. However, the former BYU center slipped at the 45-yard mark, and the play ended.
NBC’s lead analyst, Cris Collinsworth, had this to say about Wilson’s performance: “You know, that’s better than what you would’ve gotten from him last season. That’s the growth you like to see.” Unfortunately, those who tuned in to watch the match were not impressed with their remarks.

Viewers troll Cris Collinsworth for praising Zach Wilson
Fans were already in a bad mood for missing the chance to see Aaron Rodgers in action. So when Zach Wilson made a sloppy mistake, they did not hold back from criticizing the young quarterback. However, Collinsworth’s remarks about the performance opened the floodgates of trolls.
It was not all doom and gloom for Wilson, who threw a 57-yard pass to receiver Malik Taylor shortly after the slip. They went into the second quarter with 13 points. But eventually, the Browns overturned the lead in the third and final quarter to win the game 21-16. When the reporters asked about the accurate pass to Taylor, he revealed it was all thanks to the former Packer. “Great call by Aaron Rodgers.”
Even though Rodgers made an appearance, many would be wondering why he did not play. When he arrived in East Rutherford, Wilson was demoted. Fans were hoping to see the Super Bowl winner. So why didn’t he play?
Just a few days ago, after the Jets finished their practice session, coach Robert Saleh appeared on the Michael Show and revealed, “If he [Aaron Rodgers] does, it will be the Giants game.” According to Saleh, it will only be a “tune-up” for the regular season. So it’s no surprise that the 39-year-old was only wearing a microphone and cheering for his team.
The New York Jets will face their cross-town rivals, the New York Giants, on August 27 as they prepare for the 2023 NFL season.
