The Jets’ defense is good; there’s no two ways about it. But are they really at the level of the 1985 Chicago Bears or the 2013 Seattle Seahawks? D.J. Reed believes his unit is good enough to be put in the same bracket.

“I’m confident,” the cornerback told the press after their practice on Monday at Florham Park, New Jersey. “We have the potential to be the best defense in the NFL. I think we can be a historical defense like the [’85-’86] Bears and the 2013 LOB [the Legion of Boom Seattle Seahawks].”

It’s a bold statement considering they will be visiting their rivals, the Buffalo Bills, in a few days, who have one of the better offenses in the NFL. But the Jets’ defense can hold them off. They have managed to retain several players from last season who dragged the team to No. 4 in scoring and No. 4 in yards allowed. So it won’t surprise many that they end up being No. 1 this season. But to compare it with the Bears and the Seahawks, who defined their eras, will be a tall task to replicate.

Can the New York Jets’ defense live up to D.J. Reed’s high standards?

D.J. Reed has the backing of his fellow teammates on this matter. They agreed that the New York Jets would surprise a lot of people. C.J. Mosely, who was voted one of the captains for the upcoming season, spoke along similar lines.

“When our brothers do say that, now we have to go out there and put on a show,” Mosely said, already visualizing that fans and analysts alike will call their defense one of the best at the end of the season. “People are talking about how great the 2023 Jets defense was.”

Defensive John Franklin-Myers also chipped in with his take on the matter. He, too, is ready to prove Reed correct. “We want to be the best defense in the NFL,” he said. “We’re not afraid to sit here and go out on a limb and say we want to win the Super Bowl.”

Despite boasting a great defense last year, the New York Jets only managed a 7-10 record. Reed had his best year tackling the opposition players, recording 80 take-ons by himself. First-year cornerback Sauce Gardner won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

The only thing missing was an elite quarterback, which they filled with the trade of Aaron Rodgers. One can say that D.J. Reed and others in the Jets D have a fire lit up under them because of the arrival of a Super Bowl-winning signal-caller. It will be interesting to see how they fare this year.
