In the game that went to overtime, Michigan’s defensive unit stopped Jalen Milroe and the Alabama Crimson Tide in the goal line and handed them a loss. With that, the Wolverines became the first team to qualify for the national championship game, which is scheduled to take place next Monday.
This is the first time the Wolverines will be playing in the title game in the CFP playoffs era. The last time they won the national championship game was way back in 1997, when they went undefeated and shared the title with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The AP poll awarded the title to Michigan, but the coaches poll handed the title to the Cornhuskers.
They have never played in the title game since college football introduced the playoff system. Now, after getting knocked out of the semi-finals for 2 years in a row, the Wolverines have finally reached the national championship game for the first time in program’s history.
Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines looking to end 26-year drought
With their victory, the Wolverines have secured a spot in the CFP final, which will take place next Monday. They will be playing against the No.2 ranked Washington Huskies, who defeated the No.3 Texas Longhorns in their Sugar Bowl matchup.

Harbaugh has been one of the best coaches in the Wolverines’ history as he consistently kept them in the national championship hunt over the years.
Now, if he led them to their first championship in 2 decades, his name will be etched in Michigan’s history forever despite some controversies in recent times.
He has missed 6 regular season games in the 2023 season as he was suspended twice for different scandals. But winning the championship will quickly make people forget about those scandals.
