The Dallas Cowboys have put some daylight between them and their NFC East rivals after crushing the New York Giants 40-0 on Sunday. Quarterback Dak Prescott had one of the best Week 1 games of his career, but he credited the win to Micah Parsons and the Cowboys’ rock-solid defense.

A statement win is what head coach Mike McCarthy wanted, and that’s what his players delivered. Shutting out the Giants offense and cornering quarterback Daniel Jones on almost every play forced him to use his legs more than his hands.

The game started in the most bizarre way possible for the New York side. The Cowboys blockers stopped a field goal attempt, which allowed cornerback Noah Igbinoghene to score a 58-yard touchdown. Moments later, DaRon Bland scored another one from a pick-6.

With such plays, it was clear that it was going to be a long night for the Big Apple crowd. Unfortunately for them, the game turned out to be a disaster in the end. Not for the Dallas Cowboys, who, according to ESPN.com, are the fifth team in NFL history to open the season with a 40-0 scoreline.

After the match, the media got hold of Dak Prescott, who on the day completed 13 of 24 passes and gained 143 yards. When asked about their resounding victory, the Pro Bowler refused to take credit. He said it was possible because their defense was on song.

“It’s the first game,” Prescott told NBC’s Mellisa Stark. “It’s the discipline of our team. Getting up early, staying committed, and not getting ahead of ourselves—I don’t know why I have this [points to the matchball in his hands]. It belongs to the defense. These guys in the offensive line made it easier for us.”

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the toughest teams to break down. It’s evident from the fact that they finished second in DVOA and were third-best against the pass and fifth-best against the run.

Led by their 2021 first-round pick, Micah Parsons, they are a force to be reckoned with. They have also added Mazi Smith and Johnathan Hankins, who returned from injury. But it was the work they put in during training camp that came to fruition against the Giants.

Dak Prescott revealed that they have practiced rushing the opposition’s quarterback. When it finally worked, he said, “It was exciting [to watch].”

Up next, they will be traveling to the Big Apple to face the daunting challenge of the New York Jets. If they manage to keep the same trajectory against Gang Green, then Jerry Jones can finally start dreaming of another Super Bowl run.
