When the Dallas Cowboys signed Trey Lance for a fourth-round pick, many speculated that Dak Prescott‘s time was numbered. But Cowboys executive Stephen Jones downplayed such rumors.
However, the more they try to deny the narrative, the more it heightens the suspicions that Lance could become leverage in the future if required. Considering the salary cap is set to touch $59.455 million, it’s bound to be a trial by fire for the Cowboys. More so because Prescott is due an extension.
On Thursday, Stephen Jones addressed the situation that every Star-Hat fan is curious to know about. He revealed that Dak Prescott is going nowhere, and Lance is there in case the 30-year-old gets injured.“We’re always trying to make our roster better,” Jones said on the SiriusXM Radio Show. “We just felt that Trey gave us something that would improve that room if something were to happen to Dak.”
That’s true because Prescott has missed 15 games due to injuries in the last two seasons. But the question is, if he does get injured, Lance won’t leapfrog Cooper Rush, who is still on the 53-man roster. Rush, by all means, is the No. 2 quarterback in the Dallas locker room. Lance, on paper, will not get much of a look until 2024, even though he only has a one-year contract.
Stephen Jones says Dak Prescott is one of the leaders of Dallas Cowboys
Finding a quality quarterback is not easy. Time has proven one thing: not every college football prodigy can make it in the NFL. The opposite is true as well. Sometimes the unlikeliest player will surprise everyone with his talent and skills. Just take the example of Tom Brady, a sixth-round pick who won seven Super Bowls.
While Dak Prescott is not on the level of the former Patriot, he too has proven the doubters wrong. He was a fourth-round selection for the Dallas Cowboys, and right off the bat, he set the league on fire, earning him the Offensive Rookie of the Season in 2016.
The Pro Bowler has won 62 games, lost 32 games, and thrown for 166 touchdowns. His best passing season came in 2019 when he threw for 4,902 yards. Clearly, Dak Prescott is one of the main men in the Cowboys setup. Stephen Jones feels that way as well. “Dak’s the unquestioned leader here on this football team,” he said. “He’s gonna be around here for many, many years to come.”
But Jones once again threw Trey Lance into the mix, as if he wanted to send a message that they had other options. “Lance upgraded the room and gave us a chance if something were to happen to Dak.” Well, the Joneses’ are a business-minded family. They are probably aware that the Cowboys can save up to $34 million if they decide to trade Dak Prescott before March and not sign an extension. He is due to have a $29 million base salary in 2024, with $5 million in bonuses.
