Damar Hamlin’s horrific injury shocked the whole country as the Bills DB collapsed right on the field due to a cardiac arrest. The 24-year-old had to be resuscitated twice, once on the field and once in the hospital. Though currently, Hamlin is under a critical condition in Cincinnati, the prayers haven’t stopped coming for him.

Hamlin’s childhood friend Colts’ Rodney Thomas was devastated after hearing the news and drove over 100 miles to be at the side of his friend who he had spent his childhood with. Thomas started to drive as soon as he got a call from Hamlin’s father, breaking him the devastating news.

The 24-year-old made a quick entrance to Cincinnati and drove over 100 miles in quick succession. Rodney just wanted to be at his bedside and take a look at his condition. He was anxious and agitated throughout the drive.

“I had a goal, I knew where I was going, so I just got on the road and I just went. Laser-focused,” Rodney Thomas stated. “I know he could hear me, even if he couldn’t hear me, it didn’t matter. I said what I had to say.”

Thomas was nervous and anxious before seeing Hamlin. However, after meeting him, the Colts‘ player was calm as he believed in all the people who were taking good care of him.

“It calmed me way down,” Thomas said. “It made the trip home a lot easier. I could go home and know he’s gonna be straight, I got him. We all got him. Everybody’s behind him. You see what’s going on, everybody’s behind him. And when he walks out of there and he sees the support he has, it’s going to be a real special day.”

Hamlin and Rodney Thomas have been childhood friends and know a lot of things about each other. Thomas believes that Hamlin will walk out of the hospital on his own stronger than ever.

The childhood duo attended Pittsburgh’s Central Catholic High School and were together on the football team, playing the same position. However, their paths changed when Hamlin decided to stay at home for college and Thomas chose Yale as his college football destination.

Although they were in different colleges, they used to always be in touch as Thomas confessed that the duo spoke to each other before the Bills-Bengals game where the calamity took place.

Rodney Thomas left the hospital in Cincinnati as the Colts are about to play the Texans in their next game. However, his friend, Damar Hamlin will continue to be on his mind and heart.
