Damien Woody contradicts Patrick Mahomes by claiming the Chiefs aren’t a dynasty yet despite being the most successful team in recent times

The Kansas City Chiefs are one of the most dominant teams in the NFL right now. Under the combination of head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs have enjoyed massive success in the last few years, which includes two Super Bowl rings. Many people consider the Chiefs as the new NFL dynasty, but some, including the ESPN analyst Damien Woody, are not ready to give them that title yet.
During the recent episode of the ESPN show First Take, the panel discussed whether the Chiefs are a dynasty yet or not. Woody, who won two Super Bowl rings during his career, made his stance clear on the topic.
“Not so fast my friends, not a dynasty yet,” said Woody. “They’ve been pretty damn dominant obviously. Five straight AFC Championship games, which is mind blowing. They’ve won, what? two Super Bowls in three appearances, which is pretty great. But we gotta stop floating around dynasty, like dynasty is rarefied air, okay?”
Woody went on to cite the New England Patriots (that won six Super Bowl rings in 2 decades) as a real dynasty. Furthermore, Woody also said that if Kansas City can go back and win the Super Bowl again in 2023, then there can be a discussion about the Chiefs being a dynasty.
“If the Kansas City Chiefs can go back this year and win a Super Bowl, now we can have that discussion,” said Woody. “But for right now, I’m not gonna put them in dynasty just not yet.”
Just a couple of weeks ago, the Chiefs QB claimed that the Kansas City-based franchise is in the beginning of a dynasty. However, Woody believes there can’t even be a conversation about the Chiefs being a dynasty yet.
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs could become a dynasty in 2023
The star QB Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are currently training hard to defend their title in the upcoming season. They are looking to become the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowl rings since 2005.
If they can go back this year and defend their title, they would win their third championship in five years. Winning three Super Bowl rings in five years is a massive achievement and the Chiefs could become the NFL’s new dynasty by accomplishing that.
The last time a team defended their title was almost two decades ago when Tom Brady and the Patriots won consecutive rings in 2004 and 2005. They are currently the last NFL dynasty, which ended when Brady left New England back in 2020. And now, the Chiefs have a chance to become the next dynasty in football.
