“We are the Rich Strike here”: Detroit Lions HC Dan Campbell reckons his team will upset the top teams in the league

The Detroit Lions have a shot at proving all of their haters wrong and they have enough fuel to fire their anger as they remain the only team that does not have any nationally televised game at prime time. If you follow the Derby, then you are likely to be familiar with the story of Rich Strike. A horse that was considered to be a long-shot in terms of winning the Kentucky Derby, it went on to cause one of the biggest upsets as it ran past favorites and top-rated horses.

Dan Campbell is looking to make his team the Rich Strike of 2022. The Head Coach has a 3-13-1 record after his first season but they showed a lot of promise. Though the game may have not been on their side on numerous occasions, they played every game hard and showed that the culture in Detroit is changing slowly but surely. Campbell has made quite the name for himself. His press conferences and attitude around the players bring a positive aura to an organization that has barely tasted the sweet nectar of winning games. He has proven himself to be a coach who athletes want to play for.

HC Campbell spoke to NBC Sports and put the idea out there that this season, the Lions will be the underdogs who are coming to prove everybody out there wrong. “We kind of feel like we may be Rich Strike here,” the coach says.

Rich Strike zoomed past the finish line but just 33 seconds before that, he was 16th in the Derby. That was indeed an amazing moment in sports and very inspirational as well. The Lions coach said that it motivated him and inspired him. “One of the most inspiring things I’ve seen in a long time. It was impressive. It was beautiful.”

Detroit has been a bottom-tier team for a while now, their last trip to the postseason was in 2016 and they have not won a playoff game since 1991. This offseason brings a lot of hope for the Lions as their roster has gotten better by leaps and bounds. Starting from first-rounders Aidan Hutchinson, Jameson Williams, and free agents D.J. Chark and DeShon Elliott, the team has become much more confident than ever.

“I think I’ve got guys like Rich Strike. Every time we hear the S-O-L, same old Lions, and all the stuff, it fuels our fire. We love it. I think that’s how we all feel. That’s how we all talk. That’s how we all think. There’s nothing fake about it,” he concludes. The Lions may not get an appearance on prime-time television but they will be featured in this year’s iteration of Hard Knocks.
