The biggest news of the 2023 offseason so far is what free agent DeAndre Hopkins’ next destination is. Even after visiting several franchises, he still hasn’t penned a new contract. However, ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky has a message: he wants the New England Patriots to sign the wide receiver.

Hopkins is looking for a home where he will be able to compete for the Super Bowl. Since his release from the Arizona Cardinals on May 26, he has been linked to several franchises. He also visited the Patriots and Tennessee Titans facilities.

Dan Orlovsky, who was a former NFL quarterback, realizes the importance of the right team. He believes that D-Hop should choose the Patriots and play under Bill Belichick. The quarterback spot had a gaping hole after the departure of Tom Brady. Mac Jones replaced the Super Bowl winner in 2021 and has been a steady performer on an underwhelming side. Orlovsky believes that Hopkins is the solution. “I feel Mac Jones’ situation better,” said Orlovsky. “I will feel much better if they bring D-Hop (DeAndre Hopkins). They need to get him into the building (Patriots).”

Jones, as an athlete, has all the capabilities and tricks in his arsenal, but what he lacks is experience and explosiveness. He was the star of the University of Alabama college team, and Orlovsky witnessed it firsthand. “Mac Jones is a good player, but when you look at him through the lens of an NFL prospect, he doesn’t necessarily fit the mold of what the stars look like athletically at that spot (quarterback),” Orlovsky said.

Orlovsky believes that going into the new season, Juju Schuster won’t be enough unless they add someone like Hopkins. “In the NFL right now, either you’re gonna pound the football in play action or you’re gonna have 3 or 4 guys play one-on-one football. They (Patriots) don’t necessarily have any of that unless they have an elite player like D-Hop.”

While Dan Orlovsky is adamant about the Patriots signing DeAndre Hopkins, ESPN’s Dianna Russini believes that the 31-year-old is close to joining the New England franchise. Hopkins recently visited the Gillette Stadium facility and even took a picture with linebacker Matthew Judon.

Hopkins is going over some of those offers from both the Titans and the Patriots. He’s mulling it over and trying to come out with a decision,” said Russini. She also revealed that everyone should be a little patient, as it will not resolve itself in one or two days.

Adam Schefter, however, has a different view of the situation. “It doesn’t sound like he’s in any rush to sign a deal,” said Schefter, who pointed out that “you don’t have to sign in the middle of June when you can wait until right before training camp.” According to him, during the offseason, several things can happen. “Some team suffers an injury, some team loses a receiver; the dynamics change and shift.” Schefter claims this will give Hopkins more leverage.

Moreover, SI’s Albert Breer speculates that money is also a big factor: “I still think money is a factor. If money was less of a factor, I think he’d be a Buffalo Bill or a Kansas City Chief now.”

Whatever the situation, maybe if the Patriots sign DeAndre Hopkins, they will be top contenders.
