ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky has hopped on the Brock Purdy bandwagon, claiming that the quarterback can lead the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl. He believes that the 23-year-old is capable of replicating last year’s heroics.
Purdy burst onto the scene after franchise quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was carted off early in 2022. Not much was expected of the last pick in the draft. But he proved everyone wrong and led the 49ers to the playoffs.
Now that Jimmy G is a Raider, Kyle Shanahan has kept his faith in the rookie quarterback despite him throwing several interceptions in the last couple of training sessions. According to him, only a major mishap can stop Brock Purdy from starting as the primary signal caller in 2023.
Orlovsky went one step further with his assessment of the 49ers’ quarterback situation. “Yes, he [Purdy] can lead them to the Super Bowl,” he said in the latest segment of First Take. “I think the thing that changed a little bit with their offense post-Jimmy Garoppolo was a little bit of the Brock Purdy creativity.”
Besides endorsing Purdy with praise, the veteran analyst even showed his support for backup Sam Darnold. The former No. 3 pick has struggled in the NFL, but Orlovsky claimed the 26-year-old can lead the 49ers to the NFC title game in Shanahan’s system.
This revelation did not sit well with Trey Lance‘s admirers. Despite the young quarterback failing to perform to the standards he was predicted to, many believe he is still better than Sam Darnold.

Dan Orlovsky ridiculed for picking Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold over Trey Lance for the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback spot
Trey Lance started the pre-season friendly against the Las Vegas Raiders but did not have a great time. However, the 49ers’ offensive line was unable to keep the opposing rushers at bay.
Despite the missed opportunities since his draft, Lance has failed to capitalize on them. He has been a bit unfortunate with his injuries, and the sudden emergence of Brock Purdy has pushed him down the pecking order. Nevertheless, NFL fans refuse to believe that the North Dakota State graduate is less talented than Sam Darnold.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
Brock Purdy has been on the sidelines due to an elbow injury he sustained last year during the Philadelphia Eagles match. Since then, the Iowa State graduate has been recuperating in rehab. He returned to training during the pre-season training camp. Several question marks have been raised about whether he can replicate last year’s numbers or if he is a one-season wonder.
Fox’s Joy Taylor weighed in on the matter and claimed Purdy is still a rookie because he only played a part of the 2022 season. Most people, including her, are unaware of his capabilities. Nevertheless, Coach Shanahan is backing Brock Purdy to be successful for the 49ers.
