After more than 2 decades of disarray, the controversial NFL owner Daniel Snyder is finally out of the league as he sells the Washington Commanders to a group led by Josh Harris for a record price. The sale has been finalized for nearly a month now and on Thursday it finally got the green light from the other NFL owners for the sale to be approved.

“Obviously it was a long process,” Harris said at a news conference following the unanimous approval vote by the NFL owners. “Sometimes that’s what happens. We’re very excited to get to work and to start the new era of Washington football. And, I mean, we are humbled and awed by the level of responsibility that we have to take care of the city and to win championships and to really excite the fans again.”

The American billionaire Josh Harris is already involved in sports. The billionaire is the owner of the NBA franchise Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL’s New Jersey Devils. On Thursday he officially became the owner of the Commanders putting an end to a 24-year-long year tenure of Snyder in Washington.

Snyder bought the Washington-based football team along with the Jack Kent Cooke stadium for $800 million back in 1999. After 24 years, he has now sold the franchise for a whopping $6.05 billion. That $6.05 billion price is a new record for the highest price paid for a North American sports franchise. Some of the investors in Harris’ group are the NBA legend Magic Johnson, businessman Eric Schmidt and venture capitalist Mark Ein.

The former Commanders owner Dan Snyder’s 24-year-long run was a massive failure for the team. He has made a huge profit selling the team and has a great return on investment, but the team hasn’t been that good both on and off the field during his tenure.

The Washington-based football team has only won three NFC East division titles since 1999. The lowest among that division teams in that timeframe. Furthermore, Snyder had to change his team name twice due to controversies.

Off the field, the Commanders were recently investigated for being in a toxic workplace amid sexual assault and racial discrimination allegations. The NFL has reportedly fined Snyder $60 million on those issues after an investigation.

In brief, the Commanders fans are glad to see the back of the controversial owner. The new group, led by Josh Harris, has a big challenge on their hands to even bring back the old Washington fans to the stadium. Some success on the field in a couple of seasons would be a good start for the new owners.
