Darius Slay was the cornerstone of the Philadelphia Eagles’ success last season. The CB was instrumental in their magnificent Super Bowl run last season that ended in disappointment.

The 32-year-old CB was feeling unsettled in Philly and requested the permission to seek a trade this offseason which was granted by the Eagles. The whole situation transpired due to a contract dispute between both the parties.

The situation escalated so much that Slay was expected to be released from the club as soon as the free agency started. However, the complete opposite happened a few days later. This was because Slay had always desired to be an Eagle and wanted to stay with them instead of moving to another team.

As soon as he requested a permission to seek a trade, the Ravens jumped on the opportunity and quickly contacted the Eagles and the CB. However, Slay put a deal in front of the Eagles and stated that if they could match the Ravens offer, then he would love to continue in Philly.

The Eagles CB shared the complete incident on the Big Slay podcast where the 5-time Pro Bowler revealed how close he was to joining the Ravens. “I was almost — this close — a Baltimore Raven,Slay said. “I was this close. This close. But I wanted to be an Eagle, I stayed an Eagle because I know me and Howie were going to figure something out.”

“But the Baltimore Ravens were the first team that called, and they offered just what I wanted, and I just said, if the Eagles do that, I’m going to stay an Eagle. It was nice. I almost was a Raven. I was almost a different bird,” Slay further said.

Amidst interest from the Ravens and other NFL teams, the Eagles and Darius Slay came to a mutual agreement and the 32-year-old signed a 3-year extension to stay in Philly.

The new improved contract is worth $42 million, which offers him an average salary of $14 million. Not only that, the Eagles CB also got a signing bonus of $10 million along with that. With this new contract extension, Slay is likely to hit the free agency in 2026 now.

Darius Slay will be a worthy addition to the team. He played every game last season and recorded 3 interceptions with 67 combined tackles. The Eagles were also lacking in the CB position and needed to re-sing the experienced CB.
