Davante Adams is a changed man. Just a couple of weeks ago, the world saw him throwing his helmet down the sidelines in frustration. On Sunday night, fans witnessed him dancing with joy after back-to-back wins for only the second time this season.
Some may have shrugged off the win over the New York Giants because they had lost five games up to that point and were conceding an average of 25 points per game. But when the green side of the Big Apple rolled into Allegiant, things were bound to be different.
Even though the New York Jets are one of the worst at scoring offensive touchdowns, they balance it out by possessing one of the stingiest defenses in the league. Their last two games have been a punt fest, and despite the odds in their favor for a 1.5-point win, things reacted pretty much the same.
That’s where the Las Vegas Raiders attacked them early on. As interim head coach Antonio Pierce pointed out, the Jets were loading the box from the get-go. This allowed some, like Davante Adams, to find more empty spaces in the gang green territory.
You watch the Jets; they loaded the box. There were a couple of opportunities for Davante. Get the ball in his hands and get him going."Pierce after beating Jets
It worked like a treat. The All-Pro receiver caught the ball six times and gained 86 yards in the first two quarters. Pierce added:
Listen when you got one of the best receivers in the game—I am not stupid; I know who to get the ball.
The mood had finally changed inside the Raiders locker room. Cameras caught Adams enjoying his outing with some flashy dance moves.
Davante Adams praised quarterback Aidan O’Connell
When the team is in turmoil, it requires significant changes to make something happen. The Raiders decided to bench a $72 million man, Jimmy Garoppolo and took a gamble on rookie Aidan O’Connell.
The 4th round pick from Purdue did play one game early on in the season when Jimmy G was injured. But Pierce chose to make the 25-year-old his main man for the time being. Although he wasn’t spectacular against the Jets, putting up only 15 yards through the air, he wasn’t wasteful. His reward came in the form of a 7-yard touchdown to tight end Michael Mayer.
O’Connell targeted Adams on 11 occasions in the first half, reaching him 54% of the time. The seasoned veteran praised the level of maturity his young quarterback has shown in the past two games.
It was impressive, man! He was as cool as the other side of the pillow. He was not a rookie. I mean by years and years. The poise that he has in those types of situations, you don't see that often from a rookie quarterback. The way he talks to us in the huddle, and to throw a pick early, and the way he bounced back is impressive.Adams in locker-room interview postgame
Running back Josh Jacobs once again had the most ball carries on Sunday night. He gathered the ball 27 times and secured 116 yards on the ground.
The win over the Jets makes it 5 wins and 5 losses this season for the Raiders. Next, they will travel to South Beach and take on the Miami Dolphins.
