Russell Wilson wants to keep playing football, but it’s clear that he won’t be with the Denver Broncos. Then how about playing under a former coach with whom he spent a better part of a decade, even winning the Super Bowl?

It’s no secret that the new Carolina Panthers head coach, Dave Canales, is on the lookout for quality reinforcements for a team that only won two games in 2023. Last year’s No. 1 pick in the draft, Bryce Young’s output, was a far cry from what they had hoped. So it won’t come as a surprise to anyone if they add an experienced head to the quarterback room.

The Broncos recently released Russell Wilson after two years of turmoil, eating the biggest dead-cap hit in NFL history. Several suitors have emerged since then as possible destinations for the 35-year-old, and one of them is a reunion with Canales in Carolina.

During a recent segment of ‘Up and Adams,’ Kay Adams questioned the former Seattle Seahawks quarterback coach, Canales, about the possibility of bringing Wilson to the Bank of America Stadium in the offseason. The 42-year-old gave an intriguing answer.

Canales started by expressing massive admiration for his former Seahawks quarterback for getting out of his comfort zone and moving somewhere else (Denver).

What I will say about him [Russell Wilson] is taking that chance and that opportunity to go to Denver. I really admire the courage it took to say, 'I'm going to branch out away from what I'm comfortable with.
Canales told Adams

Will Canales bring Russell Wilson to the Carolina Panthers?

Then he switched to answering the main question at hand whether he would sign the nine-time Pro Bowler.

This is not the situation for Russ... Guys like me, who have been with him for all 10 years, and the level of comfort that comes from knowing exactly what he wants, what he needs, and what he's going to ask for.

Dave Canales was a member of the Seahawks coaching team from 2010 to 2022 when Russell Wilson was at his peak. He started off as the wide receivers coach, subsequently switching from quarterback’s coach to passing game coordinator, and then once again becoming the QB coach (Geno Smith). At the beginning of the 2023 season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers appointed him their offensive coordinator.

Meanwhile, in 2022, the Seahawks traded Wilson to the Broncos, signing a five-year, $245 million extension upon his arrival. But just two years later, he is on the move once more.
