The NFL free agency is nearing the end stage as teams have begun their mandatory minicamps and players have started training for the upcoming season. However, the former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins still remains one of the most coveted free agents in the market. He has received interest from several teams, including the New England Patriots.

The Cardinals released DeAndre Hopkins in a cost-cutting move. Since then, the talented wideout has had official visits with multiple teams, including the Patriots. According to reports, Hopkins’ visit with the Patriots went very well, but the wide receiver is yet to sign an official deal. Amidst this, the NFL insider Michael Lombardi claims that Hopkins is expecting a similar deal that Odell Beckham Jr. got earlier this off-season.

During a recent episode of The Pat McAfee Show, the renowned insider Michael Lombardi claimed that Hopkins’ huge expectations might be the reason he hasn’t signed a contract yet.

“He’s looking for a contract similar to what Odell Beckham got, which is $15 million with the potential to go to $17 million. If he hits some incentives on a one-year deal. Will he take less? I don’t know. I think that’s partly the reason why he left Tennessee,” said Lombardi.

The Baltimore Ravens shocked a lot of people by signing Odell Beckham Jr. to a one-year deal worth up to $18 million. Beckham missed the entire season with an ACL injury and hasn’t had 1000+ receiving yards in a single season in nearly 4 years.

If Beckham Jr. got a contract like that, then DeAndre Hopkins would also expect a deal in the same ballpark, but there aren’t many that would be willing to offer him that much of money.

It’s highly unlikely that the New England Patriots and Bill Belichick will spend a lot of money to land DeAndre Hopkins. However, the Pats still have an outside chance to rope him in for the upcoming season. If they can acquire D-Hop, it will be a huge game changer for the Pro Bowl QB Mac Jones, who is currently battling Bailey Zappe for the starting quarterback role.

Hopkins helped the Cardinals QB Kyler Murray to establish himself as one of the top signal-callers in the league. He can certainly do the same thing for the Pats’ former first-round pick Mac Jones.

The Patriots currently have JuJu Smith-Schuster as their number 1 pass catcher, but he is no way near a game-changing player as compared to the 5-time Pro Bowl receiver Hopkins. In brief, Hopkins would cost a lot for the Patriots to acquire, but if they can add him to their roster, he would be a great help to Mac Jones and the Pats.
