Last night, the Detroit Lions made many mistakes, but CJ Gardner-Johnson made the biggest one. By halftime, it appeared the Lions’ Super Bowl drought would finally come to an end as they were in the lead by 24-7 while the opponent’s quarterback struggled to push the ball around.

That’s probably the reason why Detroit’s star defensive end confidence turned into overconfidence. As his team took the lead by 21-4, the safety brutally trolled the San Francisco 49ers fans by waving goodbye to them as a gesture of their team’s loss.

But little did he know—the Niners ended up scoring 27 points in the second half and earning the NFC title they deserved.

Given Gardner-Johnson’s most ill-timed troll of the opponents’ fans, this gave his rival and 49ers star wide receiver the perfect opportunity to get a laugh over him. Deebo Samuel retweeted a post by Chase Senior about the Lions’ defensive end waving goodbye most bizarrely and with a cryptic smile on his face.

Wrote Samuel as he took a shot at  Gardner-Johnson. 

Interestingly, that wasn’t the only incident between Samuel and Gardner-Johnson, as the Lions’ safety also cheap-shotted the Niners’ wideout on the blindside block, right after Brock Purdy logged an interception. This resulted in a 15-yard penalty for a personal foul, which Detroit’s head coach Dan Campbell expressly mentioned as something he didn’t want to see. 

In the post-game media interaction, Samuel was asked to comment on the personal foul by Gardner-Johnson.

The whole Samuel and Gardner-Johnson drama isn’t anything new or surprising. In fact, their rivalry dates way before this NFC championship game.

Previously, in week 6 of the 2023 regular season, prior to the Cleveland Browns’ upsetting victory over the unbeatable Niners, the players erupted in a pregame skirmish that went viral on the internet, involving prominent players like Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Williams, and Jaun Thornhill. 

Upon seeing the clip of this incident, Gardner-Johnson took a shot at Samuel, putting a match to their feud.
