The feud between Deebo Samuel and Cam Newton isn’t likely to see a swift end. On Wednesday, a new layer was added to their war of words on social media.

Samuel has been at the peak of his powers as the San Francisco 49ers look to wrap up the season by finishing as the top seed in the NFC. Despite the loss against the Baltimore Ravens, the 49ers are 11-4 and are miles ahead of the second-place Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks in the race to secure another NFC West title.

Even though the 27-year-old missed a few games in the middle of the season, he turned up when required the most. Samuel tallied 53 catches for 834 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Add 179 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, and he is the full package.

But it’s his off-field antics that continue to stay on the front pages of the media for locking horns with the 2015 NFL’s Most Valuable Player, Cam Newton. That took a surprising twist when a group of football fans decided to play a prank on Samuel. They pretended to be the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner.

A Twitter user shared an Instagram conversation between two individuals duping Samuel, impersonating Newton. The guy allegedly got Samuel’s number during his playing days with the Gamecocks.

Deebo Samuel should focus more on his game than spat with Cam Newton

These are rare cases, but if the social media post were to be believed, the All-Pro receiver must have had the surprise of his life by finding out it wasn’t Newton to whom he was talking. Samuel has yet to issue a statement regarding the funny encounter. The post was up on the net for several hours before it was taken down.

Returning to the main business, Deebo Samuel needs to get his act together quickly. Besides the terrible performance of his quarterback, Brock Purdy, he too did not have a good game against the Ravens. He only managed to catch four passes for 47 yards.

It was a far cry from what 49ers fans are used to seeing on the pitch. Baltimore dealt them a reality check by beating them at Levi’s Stadium. They need to be careful going forward because teams such as the Detroit Lions are hot on their heels. They recently clinched the top spot in the NFC North and will be in the hunt for the #1 seed.
