Beef in the NFL is common. Competitive players going against each other in a physically demanding sport is nothing new. However, even in the world of football, there are two positions that absolutely despise each other: cornerbacks and wide receivers. One such beef that has surfaced in recent weeks is between the Detroit Lions‘ CB C.J. Gardner-Johnson and San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel.
It all started last Sunday, before the Niners vs. Cleveland Browns game. A scuffle broke out before that game, and Samuel was seen headbutting a Browns player as benches cleared and chaos ensued. Gardner-Johnson took this opportunity to call out Samuel and tweeted about it on his Twitter account.
Samuel clapped back at the CB, and the beef began as they went back and forth on Twitter. Following their Twitter battle, the Lions defenseman went live on Instagram and further slammed Samuel.
“Don’t be friendly when you see me because you be so flashy,” Gardner-Johnson said on his show. “You better hope all that talk you be doing when we see you all, whatever [playoff] round it may be, because I can guard you. You can’t run routes. You’re a running back. … I ain’t gonna sit here and play with you, little boy. Just because you got a little bag, people give you a little clout, and then you ain’t nothing, bro. Stop playing.”
Samuel responded to Gardner-Johnson’s Instagram live while appearing on the Up & Adams Show, hosted by analyst Kay Adams. “He just sound like he’s mad. I got a little bag and a lot of money, and no one knows who he is,” Samuel said.
The Lions and the Niners won’t play each other this season. They might meet in the playoffs, though, as both teams are 5-1 through six weeks and are playing some exceptional football. Both Gardner-Johnson and Samuel are nursing injuries sustained recently.
Deebo Samuel may return to action in week 7 against the Vikings
Deebo Samuel suffered a shoulder injury against the Cleveland Browns in Week 6. He went into the locker room and did not return to action as the San Francisco 49ers lost their first game of the season, 19-17.
However, the star wide receiver avoided any long-term injuries and is expected to play for the Niners against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 7, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Along with Samuel, star running back Christian McCaffrey and LT Trent Williams are also expected to return in week 7.
The Niners dropped their sixth-week game against the Browns after winning their first five games of the season. They are one of the best teams in the NFC and are expected to make the Super Bowl this season. They reached the NFC Championship game last year but lost to the Philadelphia Eagles.
