Deion Sanders hasn’t forgotten about the criticism and doubt that he received during the offseason when he made a complete overhaul of the Colorado Buffalos roster. The head coach fired back at all the naysayers after their 45-42 season-opening win against the TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday.

Sanders brought in 50 new recruits through the school’s transfer policy and built a team that he could depend on. But these drastic changes in the setup did not sit well, as something like this was unheard of. But the Hall of Famer had faith, and it paid off in front of a packed TCU crowd.

“We told you we coming. You thought we was joking and guess what, we keep receipts,” he said during the post-match press conference, implying he has not forgotten all the chatter about him. On top of that, he eyed a couple of reporters who had famously written against his ways.

“Nobody believed in us, and it just showed me a lot about how people are,” Sanders continued. “They let names, and they let Power 5 and stuff get to their heads.”

His son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, had a fantastic debut game. “I think this is the highest passing yards I have had in my life,” he said, as per ESPN. Shedeur spent two seasons at Jackson State, a famously Black university. He decided to follow “Coach Prime” to Colorado and set a fire in everyone’s heart with his performance. The 21-year-old, against the Horned Frogs, completed 38 of 47 passes for 510 yards and four touchdowns.

Shedeur’s father took a not-so-subtle jab at a section of the media that tends to be dismissive about the achievements of Black people. “These are things that have never been done, and it makes people uncomfortable,” Sanders added. “When you see a confident Black man sitting up here talking his talk and walking his walk; coaches and 75% of African Americans in the locker room, thats kind of threatening. But guess what? We are gonna consistently do what we are gonna do.”

Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffalos have a star in Travis Hunter

There were lots of positives to take from the game. Shedeur Sanders may have recorded his first-ever 500-yard game, but it was wide receiver Travis Hunter who stole the show. Another product of Jackson State that followed Sanders to Colorado announced himself in style.

The five-star recruit took 129 snaps yesterday. Hunter became the first Division I player in the past 20 seasons to have 100 receiving yards. He finished the game with 119 on 11 catches and an exceptional interception.

Moreover, freshman Dylan Edwards wasn’t far behind the pack. The man from Derby, Kansas, received three touchdowns and one rushing TD. Sanders said he has coached Edwards since he was seven, and his influence made him choose Colorado over a more established Notre Dame or Oklahoma.

Both Hunter and Edwards did not look out of place at all. They complimented each other as if they had been playing together for years. The win over last year’s College Football Playoff National Championship squad should give Deion Sanders and his Buffalo side the confidence they need. They will be going up against the Nebraska Cornhuskers next on September 9, who lost their first match against Minnesota.
