Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders was visually unhappy with his players after they blew a 29-0 halftime lead against the Stanford Cardinals on Friday night. All signs were pointing to a CU victory before the game, as they were fresh from beating Arizona State, but their luck ran out this time around.
Despite Coach Prime’s disdain for the Buffaloes’ 8 p.m. kickoff, they were confident. Stanford was on a four-game losing streak, and their only win came on opening day. So the onus was on the Boulder team to carry on their winning momentum.
They were handed a boost by the return of two-way player Travis Hunter. The wide receiver/corner had been a massive miss for Sanders’ team in the last couple of games due to a lacerated liver. With Hunter on their team, the Buffaloes won all of their previous games. After his injury, they lost two back-to-back games against Oregon and USC and won in overtime against Arizona.
In front of a sellout crowd at Folsom Field, the game began in favor of the home side. However, a 29-point lead in the first half quickly evaporated when the second half began. Stanford kept piling on the pressure and eventually troubled the scoreboard with a Bryce Farrell 2-yard touchdown.
It was still relatively early, and Sanders had nothing to fear just yet. But when Cardinals quarterback Ashton Daniels found Elic Ayomanor to add a 97-yard TD, it was a matter of concern. Ayomanor then marked his second endzone run with a 60-yarder, followed by a Justin Lamson 1-yard walkon.
In the end, the game went into overtime. On the sidelines, Coach Sanders was pacing up and down and screaming at his players for failing to keep the lead.
Stanford beat Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes
Even though their team was on the verge of losing the game, the Denver crowd cheered even harder. It got so loud that the head referee had to intervene. Since Deion Sanders’ arrival at CU, it has been a party hub. However, the noise was affecting the players because they were having difficulties hearing play calls.

“Will the public address announcer please stop playing while Stanford is in formation, ready to snap the ball?” the head ref said. “Any more playing of music or sound effects will result in an unsportsmanlike conduct foul against Colorado.”
The funny thing is that instead of quieting down, the stadium was filled with boos. Eventually, it died down, and the tense game resumed, which went into double overtime. However, luck was not on Deion Sanders’ side this time. Joshua Karty’s 31-yard field goal won the game 46-43 for Stanford.
It was a game of two halves in the truest sense. Both sides matched each other’s output on the day. CU had 532 overall (400 passing and 132 rushing) yards, while the Cardinals recorded 522 (399 passing and 123 rushing) yards.
Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders did not showcase his ‘Brady mode’ but produced another memorable performance. He completed 33 of 48 passes for 400 yards, threw five touchdowns and one interception, and was also the lead rusher with 13 carries for 37 yards.
Travis Hunter’s return proved how much the team missed his output. Hunter caught 13 passes and ran 140 yards, scoring two touchdowns. Wide receiver Xavier Weaver was not far behind him. Weaver had seven receptions for 124 yards and two touchdowns.
Stanford’s quarterback, Ashton Daniels, completed 27 of his 45 passes for 396 yards and threw four touchdowns. But the best player for them by far was Ayomanor. The young playmaker had 13 receptions for 294 yards (22.6 yards per average) and recorded three touchdowns.
