Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders had stern words for those who doubted Shedeur Sanders going into the game against the USC Trojans. Even though the Boulder team lost 48-41, the young quarterback shone once more.
Shedeur completed 30 of 45 passes for 371 yards, threw 4 touchdowns, and had a solitary interception. Given they were facing the No. 8-ranked team in college football, touted to go all the way, that’s one heck of a performance. Considering he wasn’t even on the radar as a top prospect just a few months ago, this is undeniably one of the stories of the season.
However, his coach/father, prime-time Deion Sanders, knew his capabilities. Since day one, the retired great has been a vocal supporter of the 21-year-old.
“He’s [Shedeur] been built and reared for this his whole life,” coach Sanders told the media after yesterday’s game. “The kid has always won; he’s always been dominant, intelligent, and concise.”
It’s easy to gauge a player’s potential from how he handles a defeat. Oregon did a number on the young signal caller, who only managed 159 yards and a touchdown. However, he did manage to complete 23/33 passes. His progress showed in the Trojan game. Even though it took him 12 minutes into the second quarter to create something meaningful, his tenacity helped them keep pace with their superior opponents.
“The kid can flat-out play,” Coach Prime added. “I know a lot doubted him [because] I just thrusted him into the starting position. What did they call it, nepotism? All of you should just look in the mirror and slap whatever you see.”
Is Shedeur Sanders Heisman material?
Only the best individual football players on the college scene get to enjoy the title of Heisman. But that road is choppy and filled with twists and turns. Shedeur Sanders had been lighting up the scene in Jackson State for two years. But he was a relative newcomer in the PAC-12 since his transfer to 19th-place Colorado.

But the 38 pass completions—47 for 510 yards and 4 touchdowns—outing against last year’s national finalists, TCU, forced every media outlet to take notice of Sanders. The trajectory continued in the next two games against the Nebraska and Colorado Rams.
So far, Shedeur Sanders, through 5 games this season, has completed 160 of 214 passes for 1781 yards (75% completion rate). He has also thrown 15 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, and an average passer rating of 163.2.
Last year’s Heisman winner, Caleb Williams, to whom he lost yesterday, is 5 out of 5 this season. Although he is currently in 19th for passing yards, he boasts a 74.3 completion rate with a passer rating of 223.
It’s still early to label the CU quarterback as one of the contenders for the Heisman Trophy. He needs to perform the way he is right now consistently. But he needs help from his offensive line. No quarterback has been sacked (22) more times than Shedeur Sanders this season.
