Deion Sanders has tasted defeats in the past during his tenure as the Colorado Buffaloes head coach. But yesterday’s loss to the Stanford Cardinal hit differently.

Despite going into the break with a 29-0 lead, they lost the game 46-43 in overtime. The visitors were as clinical as one team can be, scoring on every play they took on. Stanford had a total of eight plays in the second half, and they scored every time. They mounted their comeback with three back-to-back touchdowns and forced the game into overtime with a 32-yard field goal.

It was hard to take for Coach Sanders, who was aiming to consolidate his winning momentum. In all honesty, this result came out of nowhere. After the game, he appeared for the post-match press conference. The usual charm and charisma weren’t there on his face, and when he spoke, the disappointment was clearly audible in his voice.

“This is a little tough for me,” he said, adjusting the mic. “I’m trying my best, and I thank you all for your patience.” It was tough, all right. But he realized that it was coming. He saw the complacency in the Buffaloes players’ eyes even before the halftime whistle blew. They paid it in full return, and because of it, the Colorado team now has 4 wins and 3 defeats in 7 games. They have to win at least two more games so that they can think about the postseason.

This was arguably the biggest throw in the Rocky Mountain team’s history, and Deion Sanders was living it with his players. “From youth on, I don’t remember being up 29 {to} nothing and losing a football game,” he said. “I really don’t. This is a little tough for me.”

Deion Sanders accepted that the Colorado Buffaloes did not play well

Even in the chilly weather, Boulder Denver fans poured in to watch their favorite team play. But the result not only shocked them to the core, but it also brought tears to their eyes. During the press conference, Coach Prime felt bad for the audience.

But Travis Hunter was one of the better performers going forward. He had been gone for a while and showed that the Buffaloes had missed his presence in recent games. However, he wasn’t particularly useful in the backfield like most others in the secondary. Despite the fact that Deion Sanders believes Hunter did his part,

We didn’t play well, not just Travis,” he said. Then pointed out the downfall that occurred when Stanford scored their first touchdown. “I think it all started when we gave up on a 97-yard touchdown, which was scrap flat-out ridiculous. That’s when all the foolishness, all the complacency, and all the mess started.”

Sanders highlighted that his team is not built for the moment. In the end, a defeat is a defeat, and they have to accept the consequences it brings. After their Bye week, the Colorado Buffaloes will be on the road to face the 18th-ranked UCLA Bruins.
