The Denver Broncos have become synonymous with drama ever since the team attempted to turn its fortunes around by trading for QB Russell Wilson last season. While Denver had one of the most disappointing and underwhelming seasons in probably the entire history of the NFL, the team will attempt to once again bounce back as this season, the Broncos will be playing under the expert leadership and watchful eye of Head Coach Sean Payton.
Former HC Nathaniel Hackett was not able to make the team live up to its true potential, and it did not come as a surprise when he was fired from his role after just one season. The culture in Denver may have been worse than fans had initially assumed as yesterday, the team’s new HC Sean Payton publicly came out and dubbed Hackett’s time at the Mile-High City as “The worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL.”
While that was a rather crude way to put it, that’s Sean Payton being his unfiltered self. The Head Coach, however, in a press conference today, expressed remorse over his harsh comments toward his predecessor and accepted that stating that in front of the media was a mistake on his part.

Sean Payton regrets not exercising restraint while addressing the Denver Broncos’ performance last season
Here’s what HC Payton had to say regarding his statements yesterday: “It was a learning experience for me. It was a mistake obviously. I need a little bit more filter.” He goes on to add, “There’s a pound of flesh for these guys. As a coach, you stick up for them and after a while, you know we’re past that season last year and you know I said what I said….obviously needed a little bit more restraint.”
Sean Payton accepted that he regrets his comments and while he is a veteran in this business, and usually knows how to handle the media, yesterday was just not his day. “I told the team that it can happen and I think I’m pretty good relative to working with the media, pretty savy and I just had one of those moments.” He went on to admit that he was wearing his “FOX Hat and not his coaching hat.” (H/T: The Boston Globe)
Payton was just being unfiltered and speaking his mind while addressing the situation in Denver. The team had an atrocious season last year, and it comes as no surprise that there were a lot of blunders that were overlooked by the coaching staff.
Payton did stand up for his quarterback, Russell Wilson, and all of his players by indicating that the team has all the potential to win, but due to the lack of guidance, they were unable to click last season. He addressed the team last night and stated to them, “You guys deserve the best teaching in the world and we’re going to give it to you. They’re the best players in the world and they deserve a chance and now it’s not going to be easy.”
