“WOAH”: Derwin James wants to be the highest paid safety
Derwin James, the Los Angeles Chargers 1st team All Pro safety who underwent shoulder surgery earlier this offseason is on the last year of his 5 year rookie contract. James is in the Chargers training camp but won’t take part in team practise until both parties agree to terms for a long term extension.
James reportedly wants to be the highest paid safety, a title currently held by the man drafted 6 spots above James in the 2018 NFL draft Minkah Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick and Pittsburgh Steelers agreed on a 4 year extension worth more than $73.6 million.

Chasing Minkah Fitzpatrick esque contract
Fitzpatrick’s deal includes $36 million in guaranteed money and will make him the highest-paid safety in the league with $18.4 million per season. That’s reportedly a number that Chargers will have to surpass if they wish to keep James, a man who has proved his worth, when he is healthy.
James’s injury history may be concern for the Bolts when they negotiate this deal. James played only 5 games in 2019 because of a foot injury and he missed the entire 2020 season because of a knee injury.
Chargers head coach Brandon Staley has said per reports that negotiations for James’s contract are “taking shape” and that the franchise is working to come to terms. Chargers fans would be hoping that a deal is reached soon as James was one of the few bright spots on the Chargers defence and is expected to take a huge step forward with the newly revamped defence which now boasts in its ranks 3 time All Pro edge rusher Khalil Mack, last year 2nd team All Pro Corner J.C.Jackson and others.
