“He’ll be the highest paid safety”: Ari Meirov shares a MAJOR update on Derwin James

Derwin James reported to training camp for the LA chargers but won’t practice until he gets a new and improved deal. The reports and rumours suggest that James is on his way to becoming the highest paid safety in NFL history, currently Pittsburgh’s Minkah Fitzpatrick is the highest earner in the position with a deal up to $73.6 million which makes him around $18.4 million annually.

James was a first-round pick in 2018 and he is set to make $9 million in the fifth year of his rookie contract. The new contract is set to make him around somewhere between $180 million to $200 million as stated on the Pat McAfee Show.

Derwin James is a versatile safety who can be accommodated anywhere in the back line. He does great defence and excellent tackles and overall is a complete player. The only downside is that the 25-year-old is injury prone. He has suffered three major injuries. A foot injury that limited him to just 5 games in 2019. A knee injury due to which he was out of the whole 2020 season and a left shoulder injury in 2021 but that didn’t stop him from putting excellent numbers. James totalled 118 tackles in 2021 finishing third in the whole league.

“I think there’s full respect on both sides,” Chargers head coach Brandon Staley stated in a recent press conference.

Derwin James is in the last year of his rookie contract, which makes him eligible for a contract extension. The 2021 Pro Bowl selection won’t practice during training camp until his contract situation is settled, coach Brandon Staley said. “I think there’s full respect on both sides,”. “They know how much we love Derwin. Derwin knows how much we love him. We’re just working through that process right now. We’re gonna let it take shape. When it does, he’ll be out there.”

The Los Angelos Chargers have a snack for resigning their biggest names. In 2020 they gave Joey Bosa a five-year deal worth $135 million. So there’s a strong possibility that Derwin James will have his say and will land a big number contract maybe the biggest in NFL history in that position.
