“He deserves to be suspended for at least a full season”: The NFL will not let Deshaun Watson get away with a short suspension over his violation of the Personal Conduct Policy

Deshaun Watson got a much-need breather earlier this week as he was able to settle 20 out of the 24 civil lawsuits that were filed against him for allegedly sexually harassing and misbehaving with his massage therapists. The quarterback is still not out of trouble as he still has 4 more cases to go which may he may not be able to settle easily. Even if he is able to settle those, he will have to shell out a lot more money to move on.
That is just the legal aspect of it, the NFL is still holding a sword to his neck and is waiting for the perfect opportunity to come down on him with a punishment to discipline him. The Cleveland Browns quarterback has time and again pleaded innocence to avoid charges but the league does not seem to be convinced by his statements. The NFLPA (NFL Players Association) is worried that the Commissioner may suspend Watson for an entire season if not more as per Pro Football Network.
The NFLPA has been on Watson’s side throughout his troubles and termed his massive contract as a “turning point” for players:

The Washinton Post had stated last week that Deshaun Watson’s camp is expecting the NFL to reign down on the quarterback with a suspension for an entire season, they will make an argument that he “deserves to be suspended for at least one full season,” and the executives at the Commissioner’s office are likely to seek a “significant penalty” for the player.
The Cleveland Browns have been expecting “lengthy suspensions” for their starter but for the interim will have Jacoby Brissett start for them until they have a solid idea about when Deshaun Watson will be available. It may be futile to expect the quarterback to play in this upcoming season as remember, Falcons receiver Calvin Riddley got suspended for a year just because he bet $1,500 on his own team. If the quantum of punishment is lesser than that, the league will receive a lot of backlash in the eye of the public.
The NFLPA on the other hand has been pro-Watson all this time. They have applauded the quarterback’s massive contract with the Browns who signed him to a 5-year fully guaranteed $230 million despite his availability being a big question mark. JC Tretter, the President of the NFLPA has praised the Q’s earnings and deemed this to be a “turning point” for other guaranteed contracts around the league.
Deshaun Watson’s agents negotiated the contract in such a way that the player will not suffer any financial repercussions as a result of any suspension. His side has always expected the worst from the NFL and has been moving with the presumption that he will be disciplined for his behavior.
The Browns cannot hope to do much this season as the team has no hope of mending their relationship with former QB Baker Mayfield who would rather sit an entire year out than step onto the field as a Brown. The team is attempting to look for trade offers for him but his $18.8 million guaranteed salary is turning teams away from trying to get him on board. He is expected to be pursued by the Seattle Seahawks or the Carolina Panthers as per Josina Anderson.
