The former Pro Bowl QB Deshaun Watson is looking to play his first full season as the Cleveland Browns‘ starting quarterback. Last year he missed the 11 games due to suspension due to some serious sexual assault allegations from more than 25 women. He ended up playing the last games. And now, ahead of the 2023 NFL season, the Browns have made a bold move to name Watson as one of their five team captains.
The Browns’ head coach Kevin Stefanski recently revealed the five team captains of the Cleveland-based football team for the upcoming season. He said that the captains were voted by the players and that Deshaun has very good leadership qualities.
“Deshaun, it’s very, very natural for him to lead,” Stefanski told reporters. “And I think he’s comfortable leading from out in front. I think he’s comfortable from leading and letting his teammates get credit. That’s just something he’s always done his whole life. And just the way he’s integrated himself into this football team is impressive to watch.”
Watson, being named the captain of the Browns, was not well received by many fans on social media due to the assault allegations. The Browns QB was accused of sexual misconduct by 25 different women.
During the 2022 off-season, even NFL commissioner Roger Goodell called Watson’s behavior “predatory” and “egregious.” Watson faced lawsuits from 25 women, he settled 23 civil suits outside of court but he is still stuck with two. Watson avoided criminal charges after a grand jury in Texas ruled that there was not enough evidence to charge him with a crime regarding the misconduct allegations.
Nonetheless, apart from Watson, All-Pro offensive lineman Joel Bitonio, linebacker Anthony Walker Jr., All-Pro pass rusher Myles Garrett, and long snapper Charley Hughlett were also named the captains of the Browns.

The Cleveland Browns, naming Deshaun Watson as one of their captains, did not sit well with NFL fans on social media. Fans called out the Cleveland-based organization for naming Watson as a captain despite the numerous allegations from more than 20 women. Check out some of the reactions below.
On the sporting side of things, Watson and the Browns are currently preparing for the upcoming season. They will start their 2023 campaign with a tough home game against their AFC North division rivals, Cincinnati Bengals. Watson will play with more pressure in his upcoming campaign as he must prove that he is still an elite quarterback in the league.
