Deshaun Watson could have avoided suspension from the NFL if he had settled with the league as per report
The NFL has appealed Deshaun Watson’s six-game suspension awarded by the arbitrator, in this case, judge Sue. L Robinson as the public outrage over the matter has led to the league’s image being tarnished and their stance towards players with serious allegations has been tested. They are now attempting to make Watson get a longer suspension or make him pay up a hefty fine.
Roger Goodell on Thursday assigned former New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey to oversee the hearing of the appeal. The league wanted the quarterback gone for at least a year and now they want to get their way. In light of this, a recent report has emerged that indicates Deshaun Watson could have avoided this entire process if he had just settled his case with the NFL. The quarterback had a chance to this before Sue L. Robinson had delivered her verdict on Monday as per ESPN.
Deshaun Watson now risks being banned for an entire season by the NFL
The league wanted the quarterback gone for a whole season but they were willing to budge on one condition, if he was willing to settle with them and their final take it or leave it offer was a 12 game suspension with a hefty fine varying between $8 to $10 million. Rusty Hardin, attorney for the troubled QB did not accept the offer as they were firm that they will not agree to a suspension for over 8 games and they did not want to accept a big fine either.
His side took a huge gamble by letting the settlement talks end unsuccessfully. The tide was initially in his favor but now they are turning and appear to be shifting towards the NFL. The odds of him being suspended for over a year is higher than ever.
All may not be gone for the quarterback though as the two sides still have time to chalk out yet another settlement and conclude this once and for all. The NFL does not want to see the quarterback start in the Week 13 game against the Texans and the only way to do that is by imposing a 12-game suspension.
Assuming these settlement talks fall through once more then the case could go to a federal court but as per Josina Anderson, the QB’s camp is yet to make a decision on if they should file a federal lawsuit or not. The quarterback’s legal counsel will have to stay patient to see how the appeal fares out.
Irrespective of how this turns out, there is a lot more for the QB to go through, he has time till Friday to respond to the league’s appeal following which his fate will be decided by Harvey.
