The Detroit Lions are one of the biggest underdogs in the NFL. Ever since the Dan Campbell era began in Detroit, there has been a shift in the energy in the locker room and amongst players. The team has progressed remarkably in the last two years. In 2021, the team ended the regular season with a 3-13-1 record while in 2022; they ended the season with a record of 9-8 and ranked second in the NFC North.

The team is improving every year, and while the Head Coach has a big role to play in the team’s progression, GM Brad Holmes also deserves some credit. The team has been picking players in the draft who are talented but have the right attitude and mindset.

The Detroit Lions had no prime-time games last season

Last year was a disappointing one for the Lions, as the team had 3 nationally televised games and none of them aired on prime time. This season, however, the team has 3 prime-time games, two of them on Thursday Night Football and one on Monday Night Football. Holmes spoke on the team’s progression and had this to say.

“We entered last season with really no primetime games on the slate. We were Sunday at 1 p.m. every week. And we said, ‘Okay, well, that’s who we are, and we’re going to do the best we can.’ And so now, when you have a little bit of success, again, we still got a lot of work to do to get into the postseason. But, I’m glad that it’s recognized. And, you start getting games like this. And, you can’t be scared of it. You can’t hide from it. You can’t be intimidated. It’s like, no, this is what we wanted. So, I think it’s going to be a great test. It’s very exciting. The opener, the kickoff, primetime TV. And, I will say, I have no doubt that we’ll be ready.”

The Lions are expected to win their division this season. The team has Jared Goff as their QB but there is a possibility that their draft pick, Hendon Hooker could get an opportunity to replace him if Dan Campbell thinks he is the better option. Brad Holmes shared his thoughts on the team’s schedule release, “It came out pretty good…with the primetime opportunities. (I) always look at when the schedule comes out, always look at Week 1, obviously. Who we got Week 1, and it’s as good as it gets there.”

He went on to conclude by stating, “Always kind of look at where that bye week is being placed. So having that bye in a really good sweet spot is going to be good for us…obviously for us, always look at with our Thanksgiving tradition, always look at who we got on the slate for Thanksgiving. But, you know, the amount of primetime games, coming back from after the Thanksgiving game, really none. Kind of seeing that, it’s good that it’s being noticed, the work we’re doing. And now, we got to just take advantage.”

It’s a great time to be a fan of Detroit football as the team has immense potential among the players on its roster. It is just a matter of time before this Lions squad can make a deep playoff push and possibly a Super Bowl push.
