The former New England Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty announced his decision to retire from football back in March. Just a couple of months after his retirement, McCourty announced that he would be joining NBC Sports as a sports analyst. Amidst this, McCourty has revealed the reason behind his retirement decision.
The former Patriots DB Devin McCourty recently had an interview with Arif Hasan of the Pro Football Network where he talked about his decision to retire from the sport. “But I think especially as you get older, you start to only play to win a Super Bowl. And I was like, if I go back, I don’t think we’ll go win a Super Bowl,” McCourty said. “So as I started to sit there and be like, alright, ‘what did we really set myself up for? We were eight and nine last year? Am I gonna go to another team? Is it worth it for six months?’”
Ever since Tom Brady left New England the Patriots haven’t won a single playoff game. They also haven’t the AFC East division in the last 3 years. McCourty is right to believe that the Patriots won’t be competing for the Super Bowl in the upcoming season. They are arguably the worst team in the AFC East division right now.
Furthermore, if the Patriots failed to win a playoff game for the fourth consecutive season, the Pats owner Robert Kraft would have to make some tough decisions, especially about the Pats’ general manager and head coach Bill Belichick.
Devin McCourty had a remarkable 13-year-long NFL career
The former Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty played in the NFL for 13 long years before calling it quits in 2023. During his remarkable career, McCourty helped Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and the Pats to win 3 Super Bowl rings.
McCourty was drafted by the New England-based football team in the first round (27th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. He immediately registered himself as one of the top defensive players in the league.
During his rookie season, McCourty registered 7 interceptions and 1 sack which led to him finishing 2nd in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. He also received a Pro Bowl nod for his successful campaign.
McCourty continued his good form throughout his career. He finished his NFL career with 2 Pro Bowl nods, and 3 second-team All-Pro recognition. He also won the Super Bowl ring three times in 13 years. Following his retirement, McCourty signed with NBC Sports to work as a sports broadcaster.
