Speed is one of the primary ingredients of becoming a successful wide receiver in the National Football League. Philadelphia Eagles WR Devon Allen recently touted himself up to be the fastest player in the NFL.
The 28-year-old compared his speed with arguably two of the fastest wide receivers in the league currently, Miami Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill and Seattle Seahawks‘ DK Metcalf. While the claim itself may seem outrageous, given Allen’s lack of exposure to the NFL in comparison to the other competing names, he is particularly known for his exploits on the race track.
He represented the United States in the Summer Olympics of 2021, finishing fourth in the 110-meter hurdles event, and went on to achieve the same spot in 2022 at the World Athletics Championships. Last month Allen added to his track and field accolades by finishing with a 13.04 second time in the USATF event, the fourth-best time in 2023.
“I definitely am,” Allen said as reported by TMZ on the subject of who the fastest player in the league is currently, days after finishing second in the USATF event.
Devon Allen lost out in a race with Tyreek Hill during his high school years
Despite sounding off on his speed, Allen appreciated his senior compatriots, for what they have done in the league. He talked about his experience of racing against Hill, who is popularly considered the fastest player in the league by many, in high school. Hill and DK Metcalf have also made occasional forays into racing tracks, but Allen feels that being fast in football and on tracks are two different things.
He said,“I’m not gonna roast those guys because what they did was impressive. I raced Tyreek Hill when I was in high school. We raced and he smoked me when we were in high school and DK Metcalf ran a 10.3 a couple years ago is super impressive for a guy that’s 6’4″, 6’3″, 225, but I think especially at the top level, top 5, top 10 in the world, there’s a big gap in terms of just performance.”
Allen has an unofficial 4.35-second 40-yard dash score which is in contrast to Hill’s score of 4.29s and Metcalf’s score of 4.33s, both of which are vividly better than the Eagles’ wideout. Allen, however, has a lot to do in order to reach the benchmarks set by Hill and Metcalf in the league, after he signed a three-year rookie contract with the Eagles in 2022.
Devon Allen failed to earn himself a spot on the 53-man Eagles’ roster last season but wants to make an impact on the NFL very soon. He is determined to put in the hard yards during the offseason.
