The NFL is a business at the end of the day. No concept of loyalty exists, even though players understand that they sometimes tend to find it out in unpleasant ways.

De’Vondre Campbell, the former linebacker of the Green Bay Packers was released by the team on Wednesday. He was released without any prior intimation or hint from the front office. Campbell was not happy, to say the least, especially in the manner the team handled his free agency.

He took to X as he went all in on the team:

The organization didn't even call me to ask if I wanted to take a pay cut. They just released me after going in the media and saying me and Aaron Jones were apart of the future plans. They could've just told me the truth. I could easily be bitter but I'm not.

Campbell expressed his frustration with the fact that the team blatantly lied to his face. They led him to believe that the team was not done with him and was going to retain him on their roster. It is worth noting that, he and running back Aaron Jones were a key part of the direction the Packers organization is headed toward. But their actions dictated otherwise.

He expected a courtesy call, which the linebacker would have understood had the Packers revealed that they intended to release him. He gets that the league is a business but his objection is with the fact that Green Bay kept him in the dark and he found out about the team’s motive only after he was released. Usually, teams offer players a chance to stay on the roster if they are willing to take a pay cut or work out other alternatives but in this instance, none of that happened.

Aaron Jones was given a call concerning this matter. The running back was asked by the team to take a pay cut to stay on, but he refused. As a result, Jones ended up signing with the Minnesota Vikings after he got a better deal from the team. The Green Bay Packers freed up $10.5 million in cap space after releasing De’Vondre Campbell.

The linebacker will now look to have a revenge season as he will suit up for the San Francisco 49ers in the next season. The Packers’ handling of the Campbell situation is not surprising, teams look for their best interests and neglect the fact that players at times need to be treated courteously. Everyone involved understands that this is a business and it should not be considered a paramount task to pick up the phone and inform a player that he will be let go unless he takes a pay cut.
