The former United States President Donald Trump and the NFL world has a strong history. The billionaire President used to be a good friend of a lot of NFL owners including the New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and the Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross. Being friends with the controversial President comes with pros and cons of its own.
One particular time, being friends with Donald Trump led to the Dolphins owner Stephen Ross receiving a massive backlash. Back in 2019, when Trump was still the US President, Ross hosted a fundraiser for Trump. This was after he told New York Magazine, “I don’t like Donald, okay? We can stop there. We’d be here all day” earlier that year.
Ross hosting a fundraiser for the controversial President resulted in a huge backlash. After the public outrage, the Dolphins’ owner had to give an explanation defending his actions.
“I have always been an active participant in the democratic process. … I have known Donald Trump for 40 years, and while we agree on some issues, we strongly disagree on many others and I have never been bashful about expressing my opinions,” said Ross in his statement.
Stephen Ross once claimed there’s a lot of good and a lot of bad in Donald Trump
After hosting a fundraiser for President Donald Trump, the Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has been labeled a Trump supporter by a lot of people. In 2020, he had to make a clarification on his stance regarding the former US President.
In a 2020 interview, a journalist asked Ross why he’s supporting Trump. “I mean, first of all, who said I was?” Ross replied. However, when Ross was reminded of his fundraiser for Trump in 2019, he had to give an explanation.
“Right. So I mean, look. I’ve known President Trump for a long time. I’ve known him and I’ve liked him. I don’t agree with a lot of his policies. I believe there’s a lot of good, and I believe there’s a lot of bad. At that point there was a fundraiser at my house I was looking for certain things to benefit New York,” said Ross. “It happened. It’s unfortunate. It caused a lot of problems for my business partners and everything. A lot of money was lost from people who were complaining about me. It makes me feel terrible.”
Stephen Ross also claimed that he regretted hosting the fundraiser after being called a racist for that. Nevertheless, Ross continues to be a successful owner of the Dolphins ever since he bought the NFL franchise in 2008 but is still chasing the first Super Bowl ring glory of his tenure.
