During the last day of the franchise tag window, the Ravens placed Lamar Jackson under a non-exclusive franchise tag, which means Jackson can start negotiating with other teams once the tampering period ends on March 13. The 27-year-old quarterback would surely receive interest from multiple teams, and one of them could be the Miami Dolphins.
The Dolphins have a stacked roster with star players all around the field. Besides, it is one of the most ideal spots for a quarterback since they are loaded on offensive weapons with a decent offensive line. The Dolphins boast a strong receiving core, which includes players like Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. But the team has issues with the QB position.
Their starting QB Tua Tagovailoa has proven that he is capable of leading an NFL franchise, but his multiple head injuries in the 2022 season are a concern for the team. Whenever Tagovailoa played last year, the Dolphins looked like a playoff team, but without him; they didn’t win a lot of games. So, after Tua suffered what is suspected to be his third concussion in the 2022 season, many people thought his football career is over. But fortunately, doctors have given the green signal for the QB to continue playing football.
Nevertheless, fans expected the Dolphins to rope in a veteran quarterback just in case Tua struggles again with his head injury. But so far they haven’t made any moves. However, the Miami-based franchise recently restructured multiple players’ contracts, including Tyreek Hill, to save some cap space, which led to some wild speculations on social media.
Social media believes Dolphins might be on the market for the Ravens QB Lamar Jackson
The Dolphins restructured the contracts of WR Tyreek Hill, and OT Terron Armstead and saved massive cap space ahead of the 2023 free agency. According to reports, the Dolphins saved around $40 million in cap space with their moves.
This could mean anything, but some fans on social media started to speculate that the Dolphins might’ve made these massive restructures to make room for a QB like the Ravens‘ Lamar Jackson or maybe even for the return of Tom Brady.
Nevertheless, on Friday, the Dolphins reportedly informed Tua Tagovailoa that they’re picking up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. This means Tua will stay with the team for potentially 2 more seasons.
So, this contract restructures could indicate that the Dolphins will be going on a shopping spree to add key pieces around their starting quarterback Tua in the upcoming free agency.
