With an 11-5 regular season record, the Miami Dolphins had high hopes for the playoffs, as they hoped to end their drought. However, it all came crashing down as the team was outperformed by the Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card round match. And the reason, if you must ask was Tua Tagovailoa‘s incompetency in the big games.
The Dolphins quarterback completed only 20 out of his 39 passes for 199 yards along with one interception and one touchdown. In the last three games of the Dolphins (including the Sunday playoff game), Tagovailoa has posted the lowest passer rating.
However, Tagovailoa isn’t viewing this as a grave failure as he remains unbothered about his contract extension with the Dolphins. Tagovailoa said in the postgame press conference:
Losing’s never fun. When stakes are higher and it’s playoff time, you feel that maybe 10 times more I would say whether it’s a win or a loss. You’ve got to live with that.Tua Tagovailoa at the press conference
As the quarterback still has one year remaining in his contract with Miami, he will again have to face disappointment from fans as he hasn’t proved himself worthy in any big games lately. When a reporter asked Tagovailoa about his contract extension with the franchise, the QB claimed he isn’t worried about that right now.
Right now, this is a moment for the guys in that locker room and our team to be with one another, to sulk in this.Tagovailoa added
For the first time in his career, Tagovailoa played all the games in the season and logged 4,624 yards and 29 touchdowns along with completing 69.3 percent of his passes. However, as the season moved toward its end, Tagovailoa’s stats went down the stretch and so did the Dolphins.
How Tua Tagovailoa’s poor passing yards cost the Dolphins two crucial games
In the last two games of the 2023 regular season, the Dolphins’ quarterback Tagovailoa has recorded below 200 passing yards, including the defeat against the Chiefs in the wild-card round of playoffs. Right before the playoffs, in the final game of the regular season, Miami fell short against their divisional rivals Buffalo Bills.
In week 18, the Dolphins not only lost the divisional matchup but also lost the AFC East divisional title and a home game as the Bills secured the title. Quarterback Tagovailoa recorded only 173 passing yards in that game.
Considering his recent performances, fans are disappointed in the quarterback. However, there still are some fans who refuse to leave Tagovailoa’s side and are hopeful for a win in the future, as their quarterback has gained playoff experience now.
