NFL is known for its high-octane matches as teams battle each other every week to reach the Super Bowl and win the coveted Lombardi Trophy and be crowned the world champions. Other than the obvious allure of football, the NFL is also notoriously famous for scandals and controversies. Players, owners, and league officials basically, everyone has been involved in some scandal or some kind of controversy.

One controversy that caught the world’s attention was back in 2016. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was kneeling during the national anthem to show solidarity against the raging police brutality in the United States against African-Americans and minorities.

Kaepernick kneeling motivated others to do so as well, which created a wave in the entire league. However, not everyone was pleased with players kneeling during the national anthem as it was considered a disrespect to the American flag. Kaepernick was kind of blacklisted from the NFL as no team would sign him after the incident. He never played in the league after that.

During this kneeling fiasco, Donald Trump was the President, and boy did he have a few things to say about Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem. “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out! He’s fired. He’s fired!’” Trump said during a rally.

Donald Trump also tweeted, “If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL,or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect….” This enraged NFL fans because Trump was forcing team owners to fire players for kneeling. Some military veterans and personnel said that they didn’t see kneeling as a disrespect to the flag or the national anthem because it was well within their rights to do so. Here’s how fans reacted to Trump’s tweet asking owners to fire players.

Colin Kaepernick, unfortunately, became the target of team owners because they wanted the heat to die down. Owners wanted to set an example so that players wouldn’t continue kneeling and attract the attention of the POTUS every other day.
