Jerry Jones was involved in a massive controversy way back in 2018 when he ordered his players to stand for the national anthem despite massive arguments against it.
The NFL was divided over kneeling for the national anthem or standing for it. Many players were taking the knee due to racial injustice and police brutality prevalent at the time.
“Our policy is you stand during the anthem, toe on the line,”Jerry Jones said in 2018 during a team press conference. Former President of the United States Donald Trump took notice of the situation and rallied behind the Dallas Cowboys owner.
Trump was the President at the time and completely supported Jones’ decision to make his players stand during the National Anthem before every game.
“Way to go Jerry. This is what the league should do!” Donald Trump stated on Twitter. Following Trump’s comment the issue soon became a national one and the NFL decided to take some action.
Therefore, the league came up with the decision that the players must stand during the National Anthem, and if they don’t wish to, then they can wait in the locker room. Although Donald Trump was in support of Jerry Jones’s comment, the Cowboys owner was critical of the former President of the United States and called him out.

Jerry Jones savagely criticized Donald Trump

Donald Trump was in favor of Jerry Jones’ announcement in 2018 asking his players to stand for the National Anthem. However, Jones wasn’t happy with the statement and believes that it was unprecedented.
“His interest in what we’re doing is problematic, from my chair, and I would say in general the owners’ chair,” Jerry Jones stated. “It’s unprecedented, if you really think about it. But like the very game itself, that’s the way it is and we’ll deal with it.”
In essence, the Cowboys owner believes that the President of the country shouldn’t get involved with the workings of the league and its players. This was a bold move by the Billionaire owner, who is often known for these kinds of things.
Jerry Jones later went on to have a lengthy battle with the NFL over the same issue and even threatened to sue the league for different reasons. However, the controversy soon faltered.
